This week Apple made a series of announcements on new products and business strategies. Here are the highlights:

New Product Strategy. Apple's new product strategy for consumers and professionals features two lines of portables and two lines of desktops. The announcement launches Apple back into the consumer market with innovative new products.

iMac Combines the Possibilities. With one-button online access and a stunning new design, iMac combines the possibilities of the Internet with the capabilities of the Macintosh.

Hungry PowerBook G3. It's sleek. It's intelligent. It's endlessly adaptable. And it eats Pentium notebooks for lunch. It's the new PowerBook G3.

Online Education Store. The brand-new Apple Store for education offers online configuring, shopping, and secure purchasing environments where eligible customers can buy Apple products and services.

[1] New Software Releases

Mac OS Installer Helper is a utility that helps users perform a clean installation of new system software releases.

The AppleShare IP Mail 5.0.4 Beta Seed corrects a problem that could allow a malicious user or an ill-behaved mail SMTP client to make the AppleShare IP Mail server crash.

AppleShare Client Setup 1.0 is a utility for customizing the AppleShare Client.

MODE32 7.5 enables Macintosh II, IIx, IIcx, or SE/30 systems running Mac OS 7 to run in 32-bit addressing mode.

User and Group Manager Lite 1.1 lets you manage users and groups on network servers from a workstation running AppleShare 3.x and later and AppleShare IP 5.x servers.

[5] Mac OS Tool News: Retrospect Driver Update

Retrospect 4.0 Driver Update, version 1.4, is free to current users. It updates Retrospect or Retrospect Express backup software to support new drives and to work around a bug in the "MESH" SCSI controller found on various Mac OS computers.

[6] Virus Alert
Developers should be on the lookout for a new "worm" virus, AutoStart 9805, which has spread quickly in and around Hong Kong. It transmits itself through Macintosh (HFS or HFS+) disk volumes, overwriting files with random data. For details and a list of "antidote" utilities, see the MacFixit web site

Tenon's WebTen web software development kit integrates Macintosh and UNIX Apache web development with a universal plug-in architecture. Its new development tools let developers create web plug-ins that run on both Mac OS and on Rhapsody, and let UNIX developers seamlessly move their web applications to Mac OS.

FileMaker Pro Developer Edition has received 100% Pure Java Certification from Sun Microsystems' Java software division. This product, scheduled to ship in June, will provide developers with a completely platform-independent solution to develop custom databases for enterprise markets.

[10] Apple Launches a Summer Promotion
Customers who purchase a Power Macintosh G3 desktop or minitower system between May 1, 1998, and June 26, 1998, can receive an additional 32 MB of memory or Connectix Virtual PC compatibility software at no additional cost.

[11] New Third-Party G3 Processor Upgrade Cards
Sonnet Technologies just began shipping three new models of PowerPC G3 (750) processor upgrade cards for first-generation Power Macintosh computers. Crescendo G3 upgrade cards for Power Macintosh 6100, 7100, 8100, and Performa 611x boost the performance of the original PowerPC 601 processor by more than eight times that of a stock system.

[12]Quicken Back on the Mac OS Platform
Intuit has recommitted to developing Quicken products for the Mac OS. Apple and Intuit will work together to promote Quicken 98, and Intuit will develop a new version of Quicken for Macintosh, available in 1999.

[13] Apple Gains Market Share

Citing new data from International Data Corporation, C|Net reports that Apple increased its market share in the United States in the first quarter of 1998. The report attributes the gains to strong sales of Power Macintosh G3 systems.

[14] SPA Market Reports Free to Members
The Software Publishers Association (SPA) is currently offering two free software market reports to its members. The first, "Education Market Report: Post-Secondary," discusses trends and demographics in the post-secondary school market. It includes data and analysis on software, computers, networks, the Internet, and funding sources. The second, "Consumer Market Survey Report," addresses home PC configuration, applications, games and entertainment, education and "edutainment," personal productivity, and video game data. [16] AppleMasters to Speak at WWDC
Four fascinating AppleMasters will discuss creative uses of Macintosh computers at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). See Sir Chris Bonington, mountaineer, writer, and photographer; Jim Ludtke, video animator; Douglas Adams, author and fantasist; Michael Kamen, musician and composer; and Paul Davis, graphic designer and artist on Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. PDT at the WWDC. There's still time to register!

[17] The Game Development Session at WWDC
Apple will be holding a Mac OS Game Technology API session at the WWDC on Wednesday, May 13, at 11:30 a.m. Although Rhapsody directions will be discussed, this won't be the main focus of the session.

[18] MACWORLD Expo, July 7-10, New York City
You can now register online for this summer's MACWORLD Expo, to be held in the Jacob K. Javitts Convention Center, New York City, July 7-10. [19] How to Get the 1997 MacHack CD
MacHack, "the annual conference for leading-edge developers," with support from Apple and MacTech Magazine, have just released the MacHack 1997 CD. This CD includes more than 50 of the hacks and source code samples submitted to the 1997 Hack contest, including source for the winning hack, "BillBoot," which replaces the standard Macintosh boot sequence with a Windows 95-like sequence. The CD's content is also available for no charge from the MacHack FTP site. You can order the CD for US$ 25 through the MacHack web site.

[20] A New Internet E-mail Client Features Advanced Filtering
Bare Bones Software just announced the availability of version 1.0 of Mailsmith, a new standards-based Internet e-mail client for the Mac OS. Mailsmith is a full-featured Internet e-mail application that offers unparalleled filtering, searching, editing, and scripting capabilities.
