G3 Firmware Update 1.1 improves PCI performance on all Power Macintosh G3 Desktop (Blue and White) systems. If you updated your firmware to 1.0.2, then it's not necessary to download this update.

Remote Install for Mac OS 8.5.x and 8.6 1.0, along with Apple Network Assistant, enables you to install Mac OS 8.5 and 8.6 software on workstations on your network.

[6] Time-Saving Utilities: MediaWrapper Light 2.0.5, NameCleaner 1.9.6

MediaWrapper Light 2.0.3 by John Clark lets you scan a removable disk, and print out the contents on a wrapper that you can insert into a disk case. MediaWrapper Light currently supports Zip, Jaz, CD-ROM, EZ Flyer, SuperDisk, SyJet, SyQuest, and MagnetoOptical disk formats.

NameCleaner 1.9.6 from Sig Software helps you manipulate file names and types, making it easier to move files to and from foreign file systems such as MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows95, Windows NT, NetWare, and UNIX.

[7] Major Game Developers On Macintosh
Apple has announced that the developers of highly-anticipated computer games such as Madden NFL 2000, TRIBES II, and Star Wars Episode I: Pod Racer are releasing simultaneous Macintosh and Windows versions of their titles. This follows Apple's announcement earlier this week that over 3,100 new or updated Macintosh software titles have been announced during the past 12 months.

[8] Apple Announces Winners of Software Design Awards
Apple Computer has announced the winners and runners-up of the fourth annual Apple Design Awards for Mac OS developers. The Apple Design Awards recognize outstanding applications developed for the Macintosh platform over the last year and highlight the creativity and innovation of Apple's developer community.

"Developers have rediscovered that Macintosh is where they can create a great business," said Clent Richardson, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. Apple Design Award winners and runners-up in each category include:

[12] QuickTime 4 Downloads Pass Three Million in First Month
There have been more than three million downloads of QuickTime 4 software during the first month since its launch. QuickTime 4 features "streaming" of live and stored video and audio over the Internet, and is the first Internet streaming solution to use open, industry-standard protocols (RTP and RSTP), eliminating the "server tax" charged to content providers by competitors using proprietary protocols.

[13] New QuickTime Releases: QuickTime Streaming Server 1.0 Updater, Intel Indeo Video 5 for Macintosh or Windows 5.0

QuickTime Streaming Server (QTSS) 1.0 provides stored and live multimedia streaming services to clients that support QuickTime 4.0. This release updates the QuickTime Streaming Server Preview software shipped with Mac OS X Server to the Golden Master (GM) version.

Intel Indeo Video 5 for Macintosh 5.0 lets you compress and play back Intel Indeo Video 5 in QuickTime files. This compressor supports the password protected media keys and the transparency features of Indeo Video.

A new PowerBook G3 Series developer note was posted to the Developer Technical Publications web pages this week.

[22] Third-Party Peripheral News: Sonnet Processor Upgrade Price Reductions, VST PowerBook G3 Accessories, FireWire CardBus Cards for PowerBook G3 computers

Sonnet Technologies has set new price/performance standards for G3 processor upgrades with lower prices on its Crescendo G3 product lines for the NuBus, 20th Anniversary Power Macintosh, and StarMax 5500/6500 computers.

VST Technologies has announced a complete line of storage and power accessories -- including the VST Zip100 for Macintosh -- for use with the new Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series computers.

Newer Technology has introduced the first FireWire CardBus Card for Apple's new PowerBook G3 Series computers. FireWire 2 Go enables users to easily connect to any self-powered FireWire device, including external hard drives and digital video cameras. The company has also added several new high-performance FireWire hard drives to their product line.

[23] FireWire Standard Strengthened with Joint Licensing Program
Apple, Compaq, Matsushita, Royal Philips Electronics, Sony, Toshiba, and the newly joined companies Canon, Intel, Mitsubishi, STMicroelectronics, and Zayante have announced the implementation of a joint licensing program for patents essential to the IEEE1394 digital interface, also referred to as "FireWire". At this time, the eleven companies have decided to license essential patents.

[24] Apple's Retail Unit Sales More Than Double In April
PC Data reported that unit sales more than doubled for Apple from the year ago period, much greater than the 21 percent growth shown in the overall PC sector. Apple took third in retail share, behind Hewlett-Packard (#2) and Compaq (#1).
