MACWORLD Expo Announcements

[1] Apple Unveils the iBook Consumer Portable
Apple has introduced iBook, the "iMac to Go," which features battery life of up to six hours, Pentium-toasting performance, and Apple's revolutionary AirPort wireless Internet networking for cable-free Internet access (optional). The iBook is available in two eye-catching colors -- Blueberry and Tangerine.

[2] Apple Introduces AirPort Wireless Networking
Apple's AirPort solution includes the AirPort Card, which fits inside the new iBook, and the AirPort Base Station, which contains a 56K modem and a 10BASE-T Ethernet port for connecting to a phone line, cable modem, DSL modem, or local area network.

[3] QuickTime TV Debuts
Apple has introduced QuickTime TV (QTV), the Internet's highest quality network for web-based video and audio. QTV seamlessly integrates four key elements: Apple's QuickTime 4 Player software; Apple's open-source QuickTime Streaming Server software; the Apple/Akamai Technologies streamed content delivery service; and compelling content from leading providers. QTV is provided free of charge to viewers.

[4] Developers Exceed Expectations
Demonstrating continued enthusiasm for the Macintosh platform, Apple's partners and developers have introduced more than 5,000 new hardware and software products for the Macintosh platform in the last 12 months, bringing the total number of shipping Macintosh products to more than 13,100.

[5] IBM and Apple Demonstrate ViaVoice for Macintosh
IBM and Apple today demonstrated IBM's ViaVoice, the first continuous speech recognition software for the Macintosh platform. Based on IBM's award-winning technology, ViaVoice for Macintosh will give users an intuitive, easy-to-use interface for performing a number of everyday computer tasks, such as creating email and editing documents.

[6] New Releases: USB Adapter Card Support 1.2

USB Adapter Card Support 1.2 is a set of software extensions that provide support for USB PCI adapter cards installed in Macintosh computers. (Support for Macintosh systems with built-in USB ports and USB PCI adapter cards is already included.)

Apple's Developer Documentation site provides access to all of Apple's current developer documentation in HTML and PDF formats, with easy access to relevant Technical Notes and Technical Q&As.

[9] Mac OS Tool News: New MacTech CD-ROM

MacTech Magazine, the Journal of Macintosh Technology and Development, has just released the new MacTech CD-ROM (Volumes 1-15, through June 1999), a complete reference collection for Macintosh programmers. This release features a new tool for collecting and compiling the latest references for Mac OS APIs into a compact, easily searchable, THINK Reference format. This CD, which normally sells for US$ 129, will be available for only US$ 99 until August 31.

[10] Useful Utilities: Norton Utilities for Macintosh 5.0, Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 6.0, DropFTP 1.0a5, Akua Sweets 1.33, Mathematica 4

Symantec has announced new releases of its popular Macintosh utilities: Norton Utilities for Macintosh 5.0 and Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 6.0.

DropFTP 1.0a5 by Visa Kopu is a small, easy-to-use AppleScript "droplet" that uses the Anarchie Pro FTP client to transfer files to designated locations on a remote FTP server.

Akua Sweets 1.33 is a set of more than 100 scripting additions and 150 example scripts showing their use. There are scripts that can help you mount network volumes, convert text to a UNIX format, control remote systems, display images, work with HTML tags, and more.

Mathematica 4 from Wolfram Research, the latest relese of Wolfram Research's award-winning technical computing system, combines faster calculating abilities with a comprehensive collection of visualization and technical publishing tools -- all in a single, elegant environment.

[11] New Releases: Mac OS X Server Update 1.0-2

Mac OS X Server Update 1.0-2 includes Apache Web Server 1.3.6, corrections to a problem associated with executing a large number of simultaneous CGI scripts, enhanced stability, and more.

[12] Mac OS X Server Tool News: OpenBase SQL Database 6.0.3, iTools 5.0, WebTen 3.0, NetTen 1.4, OmniWeb 3.0

OpenBase SQL Database 6.0.3 features a faster JDBC driver; an improved EOF 3.0 adaptor, providing better error reporting; some performance enhancements for searching ranges of data; and new licensing options.

Tenon Intersystems has introduced three new product releases: iTools 5.0, WebTen 3.0, and NetTen 1.4. iTools 5.0 extends Mac OS X Server's networking performance, efficiency, ease-of-use, and functionality with a family of tools essential to serious web content developers. WebTen 3.0 is an easy-to-use Apache Web Server. NetTen 1.4, a Mac OS version of Software.com's highly-acclaimed Post.Office, is an industrial-strength mail, POP mail, and IMAP server with state-of-the-art "spam" control.

OmniWeb 3.0 for Mac OS X Server adds functionality, speed, and compatibility to this OmniGroup web browser, which is much-loved for its ease-of-use and multithreaded performance.

[13] New JFC/Swing Release Available from Sun
JFC/Swing 1.1.1 from Sun Microsystems is now available for download. This release includes bug fixes, some performance improvements, and new features, such as multilined labels. JFC/Swing 1.1.1 requires JDK 1.1.8.

[14] Free Australian Java Developer Workshop, Aug. 19-20
Apple Worldwide Developer Relations cordially invites you to attend a Java developer kitchen on August 19 and 20 in Sydney, Australia. (A "kitchen" is training and hands-on workshop where you can work directly with Apple engineers to optimize and debug your Java source code.) It will focus on Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) 2.2 (based on the JDK 1.1.8+) and QuickTime for Java. Attendees must be knowledgeable in Java development on Mac OS using MRJ, and must have source code to bring to the event. Interested developers should e-mail Alan Samuel at bluker1@apple.com, with INVITATION in the subject line.

[15] Final Cut Pro 1.0.1 Update Available

Apple is now shipping Final Cut Pro 1.0.1, a minor update to its professional-quality video editing, compositing, and special effects tool. This release offers increased compatibility, bug fixes, and general improvements.

This site provides access to all of Apple's current media-related documentation in HTML and PDF formats, with easy access to relevant Technical Notes and Technical Q&As.

Final Cut Pro 1.0.1: FireWire 2.1 Supported (#31055)

[18] Audio Tool News: PlayerPro 5.2.1, MacAmp 1.0

PlayerPro 5.2.1 by Antoine Rosset is a complete music editing tool, as well as a SoundTracker player. You can use it with any Macintosh computer, without any additional hardware. PlayerPro can load and play MOD, S3M, MIDI, MTM, MADx, OKTA, System 7 sound, MINS, WAV, XI, AIFF, AIFC, MED, 669, and XM file formats.

MacAMP 1.0 Preview Edition lets you try out the @soft MPEG audio decoder. It works with both MPEG 1 and MPEG 2 audio streams (except for the multichannel extensions defined in MPEG 2), and it plays MP3 files.

[19] Interactive Media Tool News: InterView 1.0.1, Digital Media Remote, Electrifier Pro 1.02, Portfolio 4.1

InterView USB/PCI 1.0.1 from XLR8 enables Mac users to capture and edit video from any standard video source including camcorders and VCRs. It comes bundled with Strata VideoShop 4.5 (video editing software,) an s-video/AV to USB/PCI cable, and a stereo adapter for sound input.

Digital Media Remote from Keyspan enables you to remotely control Apple CD, DVD, and QuickTime Players, as well as other digital media players and presentation programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint. It consists of a stylish 15-key infrared remote and an infrared receiver unit that connects to a Macintosh USB port.

Electrifier Pro 1.02 from Electrifier is a rich media authoring tool. It now supports QuickTime 4 real-time streaming content, Macromedia Flash, and MP3 formats.

Portfolio 4.1 from Extensis is a QuickTime 4-savvy media asset management database. By incorporating full compatibility with QuickTime 4, users can now easily distribute, manage, and share all their digital assets including QuickTime, Flash, FlashPix, and MP3 files.

[20] Web Development Tool News: Phantom 2.2, oAzium cc Authorize 1.0, Dragon 5.0, eMerge 1.6, Injection Pro 2.0b1

Phantom 2.2 from Maxum is a web crawler and search engine that automatically searches and creates an index of a web site's content. Phantom also provides webmasters with powerful site management capabilities.

oAzium cc Authorize 1.0 from Waves in Motion gives FileMaker Pro the ability to securely authorize credit cards quickly and easily, with no external applications.

Waves of Motion has also released the Dragon 5.0, the latest version of its FileMaker Pro solution that lets anyone create, publish, and tabulate online surveys.

eMerge 1.6 from Galleon Software lets you create an e-mail form letter, customize it automatically for everyone on your mailing list, then send it directly to Internet mail servers. eMerge sends its messages directly to each customer, one at a time, personally and privately.

Injection Pro 2.0b1 from Glucose Development Corporation uses natural language technology to automatically generate content-specific META tags and insert them into web pages.

[21] System Administration Tool News: Virtual PC 3.0, ICA Macintosh Client

Virtual PC 3.0 from Connectix is PC emulation software for the Macintosh platform. One of the key new features in 3.0 is extensive USB device support, which will allow most popular USB devices to be used both on the Macintosh platform and in the Windows environment (via Virtual PC).

Citrix Systems has announced the availability of an enhanced Macintosh client based on its Independent Computing Architecture (ICA), the emerging industry standard for server-based computing. When used in conjunction with Citrix MetaFrame and WinFrame server-based software, the new client enables users to extend the reach of Windows-based applications to a broader range of Macintosh devices.

[22] Third-Party Peripheral News: VST DVD-ROM and FireWire PC Card Kits, Newer Technology Upgrade Cards, New Sonnet Upgrade Cards, New Team ASA Gigabit Ethernet Adapters

VST Technologies has announced a VST DVD-ROM Kit and FireWire PC Card Kit for the new Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series.

Newer Technology has announced a MAXpowr G3-CC upgradeable upgrade card, a faster Power Macintosh 7100/8100 G3 upgrade card, a 466MHz MAXpowr G3 upgrade for 604-Based Power Macintosh computers, and the BookEndz Docking Station for Apple's 1999 PowerBook G3 computers.

Sonnet has added Crescendo G3 466 MHz upgrade cards for PCI Macintosh computers and 400 MHz cards for NuBus Macintosh computers.

Team ASA has announced Macintosh OS X support for its Stallion-GE-II family of Gigabit Ethernet Adapters.
