For Mac OS Developers

[1] New Releases: Mac OS 8.5.1, At Ease 5.0.2 Updater, GameSprockets 1.5

Mac OS 8.5.1 remedies problems associated with CD-ROM installation, AppleScript, and a rarely seen data-corruption problem, and improves support for third-party Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) devices. Mac OS 8.5.1 also includes an updated version of Sherlock, which improves communication through Internet proxy firewalls and adds plug-ins for Internet sites. This release is now available for free downloading, and localized versions will be available later this month.

At Ease 5.0.2 Updater, for use with At Ease for Workgroups 5.0 or 5.0.1, provides many improvements, including security with Mac OS 8.5 through Navigation Services.

GameSprockets 1.5 is a set of technologies providing the functionality that games need on the Mac OS: drawing to the screen, handling input devices, setting up multiplayer games, and simulating 3D sound sources. This release includes SoundSprocket 1.0, NetSprocket 1.1.1, InputSprocket 1.4, and DrawSprocket 1.1.4.

[2] Improved Technical Publications Site
Apple's new Technical Publications web site features improved access to Inside Macintosh, WebObjects documentation, hardware notes, and more. Look for new and updated Mac OS 8 documentation for Navigation Services, the ColorSync Manager, and the Folder Manager, as well as a brand-new WebObjects 4 documentation set and updated documentation for Mac OS X Server and Yellow Box.

Technical Q&As include information on new Apple technologies, programming tips, code snippets, and FAQs written by Apple's technical support engineers.

[5] Mac OS Tool News: OmniObjectAlloc Beta 4, Shift Key Suite 1.0.1, AutoScript.fm 1.0.2, MADE 1.2

StuffIt Deluxe 5.0.1 Updater from Aladdin Systems reenables the StuffIt Browser for Power Macintosh users: Users can now expand and manipulate (add, move, copy, and delete) StuffIt 5.0 archives. The 5.0.1 update has been e-mailed directly to StuffIt Deluxe 5.0 users who registered their copies before December 4, 1998. Users also can download the 5.0.1 update.

Extension Overload 3 is a document with information about the system extensions and control panels within the Mac OS System Folder. It helps you decide which files to remove from the System Folder and contains information on Mac OS error codes, "Easter eggs" (gimmicks hidden in the software), and more.

Mac F2C 1.4.2 is a freeware Fortran-to-C translator for the Mac OS that is compatible with CodeWarrior Pro versions 2 through 4. Mac F2C takes Fortran source files and generates corresponding C source code.

MachTen 4.1.1 from Tenon Intersystems, a complete UNIX OS for Power Macintosh computers, is now available for only US$ 249. An OpenGL option lets Mac OS users create and remotely run OpenGL applications.

AppMaker CD #11 from Bowers Development is a programming tool that helps you build Mac OS applications and graphical user interfaces (GUIs). This release features more facilities to help you with application logic, such as file I/O code and interface-control elements.

[6] Call for MacHack Papers and Speakers
MacHack, the annual conference for leading-edge Mac OS developers, has issued a call for speakers, sponsors, and technical papers. This conference will be held in Dearborn, Michigan, on June 23-25, 1999.

[8] Java Tool News: CodeWarrior Professional for Java, Hamilton Open Source, InstallAnywhere 2.5, Java/Perl Lingo Open Source SDK

Metrowerks has announced that CodeWarrior Professional for Java and CodeWarrior Academic for Java will ship in January 1999. These products will be Java-only versions of the award-winning CodeWarrior integrated development tools. The academic version will be included on the Apple Developer Connection (ADC) Student Program CD as part of an agreement with Apple. The Spring 1999 release of these tools will include easy-to-use rapid application development (RAD) tools for building graphical user interfaces (GUIs).

Microstate's Hamilton 2.0.7, a thin-client, cross-platform web application server based on Java technology, is now available as open-source software. This tool is optimized for developing online services that draw data from a variety of diverse sources such as databases and wire feeds.

InstallAnywhere 2.5 from Zero G Software is an update to the popular multiplatform, Java-application installer tool. This new version can handle thousands of files, with significantly improved performance through its new SpeedFolders technology. It can automatically install the appropriate Java Virtual Machine for a target platform, and fully supports JDK 1.2 and MRJ 2.1.

[9] Interactive Media Tool News: iShell, T.A.G. Editor 2.0, QuickEditor, Electrifier Pro 1.0

iShell beta from TribalWorks is a media creation and delivery software suite that gives media creators a fast way to assemble, manage, deploy, share and reuse media elements. It leverages the infrastructure of the Internet and QuickTime 3. (The founders of this company were the original creators of Apple Media Tool.)

T.A.G. Editor 2.0 from Digital Renaissance is an interactive QuickTime 3 authoring program that allows you to embed interactive elements and JavaScript commands. It also supports QuickTime and QuickTime VR plug-in settings.

QuickEditor is a QuickTime video editor designed to perform common editing operations in the quickest and easiest ways. Its intuitive and simple interface makes it a great tool for creating small movies for web pages.

Electrifier Pro 1.0 from Electrifier is a professional authoring tool for fast-downloading web multimedia using bitmap and vector animation, digitized audio, synthesized music (MIDI), video, 3-D graphics, VR panoramas, and "No-Bandwidth" media. It is the first product developed specifically to take advantage of QuickTime 3's new space-saving formats.

[10] Internet Tool News: BOOMA WebForms, WebTen 2.1

BOOMA WebForms from BOOMASoft is a plug-in for use with the NetObjects Fusion 4.0 site-authoring tool that helps you create and manage web forms.

WebTen 2.1 from Tenon Intersystems, the Apache-on-the-Mac web server, has just been updated. The new version improves plug-in operations and enhances sendmail support.

[11] Matsushita Licenses FireWire Technology From Apple
Apple has announced that the world's largest consumer electronics company, Matsushita Electric Industrial, and its subsidiary, Matsushita Electronics Corporation, have licensed Apple's patented FireWire technology for use in their semiconductors, consumer products, and other applications.

[12] New Macintosh-to-Palm PDA Connectivity Software
3Com has just released the beta version of its Palm MacPac 2 software, which turns your Palm OS-based organizer into a natural extension of your Mac OS computer. Clent Richardson, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, is spearheading the drive to support Palm developers' efforts through the Apple Developer Connection.

DataViz also announced Documents To Go, a new synchronization product that brings important files from office suite applications, such as Word, Excel, and others, to the Palm Computing platform. Documents To Go uses 3Com's HotSync technology to provide a complete solution for viewing up-to-date versions of everyday documents on any Palm organizer (running Palm OS 2.0 or higher). It will be released in the first quarter of 1999 for both Mac OS and Windows.
