[1] Apple Online Store Rings Up Millionth Customer
Apple announced that its award-winning online store had its millionth unique customer last week. Featuring extensive build-to-order capabilities and easy 1-Click shopping, the Apple Store currently operates in 20 countries and eight languages, offering Apple's entire product line, as well as third-party software and solutions.

[2] MacUser Magazine Honors Five Apple Products
Apple products and technologies garnered five honors at the annual MacUser awards ceremony, which took place on November 21 in London. Apple won in these categories:
  • Product of the Year: 17-inch iMac G4
  • Innovation of the Year: Rendezvous
  • Hardware of the Year: iMac G4
  • Video and Video Production: Final Cut Pro 3
  • Displays: 23-inch Cinema HD Display
Other winners included Adobe Photoshop 7 (Software of the Year and 2D Graphics), DreamWeaver MX (Web Site Design and Publishing), the D-Link Bluetooth Adaptor (Comms and Networking), Microsoft Office v. X (Business and Productivity), and Reason 2.0 (Music and Audio).

[3] Macworld Magazine Editors' Choice Awards Announced
IDG's Macworld Magazine just announced the 2001 Editors' Choice Award winners, where 68 Mac-compatible products were recognized for design excellence and innovation. Apple products won awards in these categories:
  • Mac of the Year: iMac G4/800
  • Breakthrough Product of the Year: iPod
  • Best Digital-Video Software: Final Cut Pro 3t

[4] New Releases: iMac SuperDrive Firmware Update 1.0
The iMac SuperDrive Firmware Update 1.0 application installs new SuperDrive firmware that addresses an incompatibility with 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW media, and the 2x SuperDrive in the iMac. This update is required only for iMac models with 15" flat panel displays and an internal SuperDrive.
[5] Hardware Tool News: FWB SMART Toolkit 1.1
FWB SMART Toolkit 1.1 from FWB Software uses a feature called Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology built into most modern ATA hard drives to monitor your drives and alert you before failure. Version 1.1 adds support for mac.com email accounts, updated authentication methods for email alerts, and more.

[6] New Releases: Mac OS X Server Update 10.2.2
The Mac OS X Server Update 10.2.2 delivers enhancements and reliability to the following services and components: Mac OS Extended (HFS+) journaling, software RAID, NFS, FTP, Print services, Apache 2, WebMail, IP Firewall, LDAP, Open Directory Password Server, Workgroup Manager, Macintosh Manager, and Security Update 2002-09-20.
[7] Internet Developer Article: "iCalendar Files on Mac OS X"
Apple's new calendar application, iCal, stores its data in the standard iCalendar (.ics) file format. This article covers some options for publishing iCal data, introduces some PHP and Perl iCalendar handling scripts, and demonstrates a WML calendar viewer.

BBEdit Glossary 1.6 for MGI, FileMaker Pro 6.0v4, HTTP Client Deux Pro 1.1.1, Microsoft Query X 1.0, Web Site Maestro X 2.0.1
BBEdit Glossary 1.6 for MGI from DNA Media Productions contains all of the tags for the Modular Gateway Interface language (MGI) that permits robust interactive site creation with tag-based dynamic servers.

FileMaker Pro 6.0v4 from FileMaker is a powerful database that enables you to easily organize and track people, projects, images, and information. This update incorporates a variety of bug fixes and feature enhancements.

HTTP Client Deux Pro 1.1.1 from Deep Sky Technologies is a 4th Dimension component that provides a comprehensive set of HTTP and HTTPS request methods for use throughout 4D-based projects. This release includes a number of bug fixes and component upgrades.

Microsoft Query X 1.0 uses Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) to allow you to import data from databases into Microsoft Excel X. You can use Query X to create new queries or refresh existing queries that were created in other versions of Excel.

Web Site Maestro X 2.0.1 by Ton Brand helps you manage site content, review changed pages, and upload new content. This update fixes a bug that prevented the proper entry of a Remote Directory in FTP Settings.
[9] System Administration Tool News: Simon 1.0, YourSQL 1.0
Simon 1.0 from Dejal monitors web and FTP sites for changes or failures. It includes several ways to be notified when a change, failure, or recovery occurs.

YourSQL 1.0 from Magister Ludi is an easy-to-use editor for defining databases under MySQL.

Qt/Mac 3.1 from Trolltech is a multiplatform C++ application development framework that lets you write one source-tree that will run natively on Windows, Linux/UNIX, embedded Linux, and Mac OS X. This version improves Mac OS X integration.
[13] Useful Utilities: Mushroom 1.1, Quesa 1.6d16, Spartan'02,
Molecular Modeling Software
Mushroom 1.1 from Inferiis is an easy-to-use developer tool dedicated to the management of the localized strings. This version adds support for editing .strings files contained in a folder/bundle and adds detection of known localized strings files that aren't included in the source project.

Quesa 1.6d16 is an open source implementation of Apple's QuickDraw 3D (QD3D) high-level 3D API. This release incorporates a year's worth of bug fixes and improvements, including numerous performance enhancements and an almost complete coverage of APIs.

Wavefunction offers two versions of Spartan'02, molecular modeling software for education and industry. The latest additions to the Spartan'02 line offer an entirely new computational engine and a host of interface enhancements that take advantage of Mac OS X.

Multimedia and QuickTime
[14] New Releases: Apple Carbon Sound Manager, DVD Studio Pro 1.5.2, Final Cut Pro 3.0.4
The Carbon Sound Manager Update 6.0.2, a component of QuickTime 6, improves reliability and performance of some applications that access Carbon Sound Manager. It's available through the Software Update panel of System Preferences. If the version of QuickTime 6 you installed does not require the update, it will not appear in the list of available updates.

DVD Studio Pro 1.5.2 is a professional DVD authoring tool. The new version addresses issues with setting dual layer break points on DVD-9 projects and with the flagging of Dolby Digital 5.1 streams.

Final Cut Pro 3.0.4 is a video editing, compositing, and special effects tool. The new release addresses performance and reliability issues in Final Cut Pro 3.
[15] New QuickTime Sample Code
The QuickTime Sample Code Suite of sample code has been updated for QuickTime 6. New Cocoa samples have been included and many of the most popular samples have been updated for the latest developer tools and interfaces.
[16] European Guide to Digital Video in Education
In association with Apple, the Guardian UK newspaper has published an online guide on the use of digital video in education. The guide contains a vast array of useful information, including several case studies.

[17] Multimedia Tool News: Macromedia Director MX, PDT SDK 2.1 and PDT 3d SDK, Strata 3Dpro 3.8
Macromedia Director MX is a powerful multimedia authoring environment for building high-end interactive content and applications deployed on CD/DVD-ROM, kiosks, and the web. This is the first version that takes full advantage of Mac OS X's power and stability. New features include seamless integration with the Macromedia Flash MX product family, adoption of the streamlined Macromedia MX user interface, major new workflow efficiencies, and the ability to create content accessible by people with disabilities.

PDT SDK 2.1 and PDT 3d 2.1 SDK from IDELIX are software development kits with documented libraries and APIs that help you use Pliable Display Technology (PDT) for visually displaying complex data sets.

Strata 3Dpro 3.8 enables you to model, render, and animate 3D content and output for Macromedia Flash and other file formats. This release adds Enhanced Deformation features, Photon and Cartoon (Toon) Rendering, and Stochastic Sampling, along with better Mac OS X compatibility.

[19] European "Discovery Days" Feature Education Solutions
Apple's European "Discovery Days" consist of half-day training sessions that are built around a particular theme and allow participants to experiment with a wide range of technology solutions. Designed with the needs of busy educators in mind, these sessions provide an excellent opportunity to get advice and exchange experiences with peers and experts. The first sessions focus on digital video solutions.
