インテルのマイクロプロセッサを使用するMacintoshはOpen Firmwareを使用しません。I/Oレジストリの大部分は存在し、期待通りに動作しますが、PowerPC Macintosh上のOpen Firmwareが提供する情報（完全なデバイスツリーなど）は、インテルのマイクロプロセッサを搭載するMacintoshのI/Oレジストリでは利用できません。sysctlbynameコマンドまたはsysctlコマンドを使用すると、IODeviceTreeから情報の一部を取得することができます。
