Open Firmware and the devalias node

Q: While using the Open Firmware user interface and looking at the devalias node, I noticed that these aliases seem to change with each new Macintosh. Why is that?

A: Because the value of the alias is an absolute path to a package in the device tree. These packages are ASICs, and as such they come and go, so the paths must change.
