Although content creators are not required to resize the master movie, they are at least required to create and save alternate versions of the source movie. However, we recommend providing larger dimensions so those with a LAN connection can benefit from the larger width/height and a higher quality version of the movie.
Part I of III) Creating Alternate Movies
  Introduction
  Creating the Referenced Movie
  Embedding the Reference Movie
Begin by opening your master movie in QuickTime Player and choose 'Get Info' from the 'Movie' menu option.

1.  Select 'Video Track' from the left Pop-up menu.

2.  Select 'Size' from the right Pop-up menu.

3.  Select the 'Adjust' button to resize your movie. Notice the button 'Adjust' will change to read 'Done' and the red resizing bars appear within the movie.

4.  Select any of the red resizing options in the corner of your movie to resize. Notice the height and width of the file change dimensions in the 'Get Info' window where it reads 'Current:' while you are dragging the mouse. For your target connection speed, we recommend the following playback sizes:

Rate Approx. Data Rate Playback Size
28.8/33.6 Modem 20 kbit/s 80x60
56K Modem/ISDN 40 kbit/s 120x90
112K Dual ISDN 90 kbit/s 160x120
T1 1 Mbit/s 320x240
Intranet/LAN 100+ kbit/s 320x240
5.  Upon reaching your target height and width, go back to the 'Get Info...' panel and click 'Done.'

A.  There are two options at this point: Either choose 'Save as...' from the 'File' menu option, or choose QuickTime Players 'Export...' component. Be sure to have 'Movie to QuickTime Movie' selected and the file name ends with the '.mov' extension. Choosing the 'Export...' option allows you to access the video and audio settings for further encoding choices.

B.  Save this alternate and all other alternates in the same folder. This is the directory that will be placed on the server. Save them as 'Make Movie Self-Contained' in the 'Save as...' dialog box and save the movie with the .mov extension. The naming convention used to save each alternate can make organization easier. For example, saving each alternate such as alternate00.mov, alternate01.mov, alternate02.mov and the reference movie such as alt_ref.mov allows content creators to organize movies based on project.

C.  Content creators will need to return to the 'Get Info...' panel and repeat this process for each alternate. The number of alternates created depends on the content creator. The more alternates created for each data rate, the more pleasant the user experience.

TIP  If the source movie was captured at 640x480 or any variant of (320x240, 160x120, etc...), content creators can simply choose 'Half Size' from the 'Movie' menu option in QuickTime Player to decrease the dimensions instead of using 'Get Info.'
