Reference Library: AppleScript
Following simple guidelines, developers can take advantage of built-in Mac OS X features that make the user interface of their applications available to external assistive applications, which aid persons with disabilities. Starting in Mac OS X v10.3, AppleScript provides a mechanism for controlling the graphical interface of applications that don't specifically provide assistive support. By targeting the System Events application, AppleScript scripts can select menu items, push buttons, enter text into text fields, and generally control the interfaces of most Mac OS X applications, whether scriptable or not.

A guided introduction for developers writing assistive applications.
