The last day to submit an entry for the Apple Design Awards 2009 was 5PM (PDT) Monday, May 4, 2009.
The APPLE DESIGN AWARDS 2009 Contest (“Contest”), which is sponsored by Apple Inc. (“Apple”), begins Thursday, April 2, and ends 5 PM (Pacific Time), Monday May 4, 2009. The Contest recognizes outstanding achievement and excellence in software design for the iPhone, iPod touch, and Mac.
Section I: Eligible Countries
The Contest is open to eligible contestants from the United States, Canada, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam (collectively, "Countries").
Section II: Eligible Contestants
The Contest is open to individuals or companies that are software developers (each a “Commercial Developer”) who:
- Are Registered iPhone Developers, iPhone Developer Program members, or have membership in the Apple Developer Connection. To join or learn more about ADC membership, go to http://developer.apple.com/products. To learn more about becoming a Registered iPhone Developer or an iPhone Developer Program member, go to http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/
- Are legal residents of one of the Countries and/or have a principal place of business in one of the Countries.
- Comply with these Contest Rules. For entries created in collaboration with more than one eligible contestant, each eligible contestant must comply with these Contest Rules.
The Contest is open to students who are software developers (“Student Developer”) on their own, who:
- Are Registered iPhone Developers, iPhone Developer Program members, or have membership in the Apple Developer Connection. To join or learn more about ADC membership, go to http://developer.apple.com/products. To learn more about becoming a Registered iPhone Developer go to http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/
- Are legal residents of one of the Countries.
- Are enrolled as a full-time student at a higher education institution for the current academic year.
- Are not currently obligated by any verbal or written contracts with any commercial software developer or their school to participate in the development and/or release of a commercial (for-profit) software product.
- Have not received post-graduate offers of employment from Apple and Apple affiliates with starting dates on or before April 24, 2009.
- Comply with these Contest Rules. For entries created in collaboration with more than one eligible contestant, each eligible contestant must comply with these Contest Rules.
Employees of Apple, Apple affiliates, subsidiaries, resellers, advertising and promotional agencies, and their immediate families are not eligible to participate in the Contest.
Section III: Contest Categories
Upon Contest entry, you will need to choose the category on the Contest entry form that best matches your Contest entry’s strengths.
Categories in which Commercial Developers or Student Developers who are Apple Developer Connection members may participate include:
- MAC OS X LEOPARD DEVELOPER SHOWCASE - Highlights innovative and compelling Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard applications. Entries in this category must be Available, Release Versions (as defined below). Apple reserves the right to award up to four winning entries in this category.
- BEST MAC OS X SNOW LEOPARD APPLICATION - This category highlights trendsetting, innovative, best-of-breed Mac OS X Snow Leopard applications which take full advantage of pre-release technologies to deliver unparalleled functionality, performance, and system integration. Entries in this category must be Feature Complete, Pre-Release Versions (as defined below).
Categories in which Commercial Developers or Student Developers who are Registered iPhone Developers may participate include:
- iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE - Highlights innovative, compelling, highly impactful or entertaining new iPhone applications, built using the iPhone SDK for iPhone OS 2.2.1. Entries in this category must be Available, Release Versions (as defined below) and available for download from the iTunes App Store. Apple reserves the right to award up to four winning entries in this category.
- BEST iPHONE OS 3.0 BETA APP - This category highlights trendsetting, innovative, best-of-breed iPhone apps, built using the iPhone 3.0 beta SDK, which take full advantage of new iPhone 3.0 beta technologies to deliver unparalleled functionality, performance, and system integration. Entries in this category must be Feature Complete, Pre-Release Versions (as defined below).
Categories in which Student Developers may participate include:
- BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD STUDENT APPLICATION- This category highlights Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard applications developed exclusively by Student Developers. Entries in this category must be Available, Release Versions (as defined below).
- BEST iPHONE STUDENT APP - This category highlights iPhone apps developed exclusively by Student Developers. Entries in this category must be Available, Release Versions (as defined below).
Apple reserves the right to declare a Contest entry a winner in any category independent of the category or categories in which it was entered.
Section IV: Judging
Entries in each category will be judged using the following criteria:
- PLATFORM INNOVATION – This criterion evaluates revolutionary and inspirational characteristics and new or substantially improved functional characteristics, technical breakthroughs, societal impact, and significant user productivity enhancements.
- DESIGN & QUALITY – This criterion evaluates how elegant, delightful, intuitive, inviting, engaging, exciting, organized, polished, efficient, easy to use, and compliant with the Mac OS X or iPhone Human Interface Guidelines an entry is.
- INTEGRATION & TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION – This criterion evaluates advanced, and impactful use of Mac OS X or iPhone OS technologies to deliver innovative, compelling, highly impactful functionality and to integrate with relevant system services, applications, and data.
- PERFORMANCE TUNING & OPTIMIZATION – This criterion evaluates stability, quality, performance tuning, optimal memory usage, minimal startup time, use of optimized libraries, and overall responsiveness.
- CONNECTEDNESS - This criterion evaluates the connected nature of the application and how it brings added value to the user via content and info sync to the desktop and/or cloud, and the degree to which content can be used on iPhone, iPod, and/or Apple TV.
- LOCALIZATION – This criterion evaluates the quality of localization and quantity of localized versions and App Store meta data (where applicable)
Section V: Eligible Entries
Eligible Contest entries in the MAC OS X LEOPARD DEVELOPER SHOWCASE, BEST MAC OS X SNOW LEOPARD APPLICATION, or BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD STUDENT APPLICATION, categories:
- Must be the English language version of a complete, self-contained application for Mac OS X. Device drivers, code libraries, development frameworks, or kernel extensions entered on their own are unacceptable and will be disqualified.
- “Release Version”. Submissions must be the available, release version. Submissions of pre-release versions will be disqualified. “Release Version” means your entry is released and Available to the general public as of the date you enter the Contest. “Available” means that customers have been informed of, or can obtain information about, your Contest entry via email, press release, product web page, or other similar type of public communication, and can purchase, download, or otherwise obtain or access an identical version of your Contest entry.
- Must run natively on Intel-based Macintosh computers.
- Must execute directly on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
- Must be a major point release version newer than previous Apple Design Awards submissions, if applicable.
- Must be accompanied by any registration codes, serial numbers, or software protection dongles required to activate full functionality.
- May use Open Source technology which is publicly available under an Open Source Initiative (OSI)-approved open source license.
- Must include demo files and/or demo scripts and/or other materials useful for product demonstration purposes.
Eligible Contest entries in the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE and BEST iPHONE STUDENT APP categories:
- Must be the English language version.
- Must be available for download on the iTunes App Store.
- Entries which are in violation of the Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions or the iPhone SDK Agreement or, if applicable, the iPhone Developer Program Agreement, are unacceptable and will be disqualified. The Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions are made available to you when you become a Registered iPhone Developer. The iPhone Developer SDK Agreement is available to Registered iPhone Developers through the Downloads section of the iPhone Dev Center. The iPhone Developer Program Agreement is provided to you upon acceptance by Apple into the iPhone Developer Program.
- Must run natively on iPhone 3G or iPod touch (2nd Generation).
- Must be built and developed using the tools and frameworks provided in the iPhone SDK for iPhone OS 2.2.1.
- Must be in full compliance with the Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions, and the iPhone SDK Agreement, and, if applicable, the iPhone Developer Program Agreement.
- Must include demo scripts and/or other materials useful for product evaluation and demonstration purposes.
Eligible Contest entries in the BEST iPHONE OS 3.0 BETA APP category:
- Must be the English language version of a complete, self-contained application for iPhone OS 3.0 beta.
- Entries which are in violation of the Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions or the iPhone SDK Agreement or, if applicable, the iPhone Developer Program Agreement, are unacceptable and will be disqualified. The Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions are made available to you when you become a Registered iPhone Developer. The iPhone Developer SDK Agreement is available to Registered iPhone Developers through the Downloads section of the iPhone Dev Center. The iPhone Developer Program Agreement is provided to you upon acceptance by Apple into the iPhone Developer Program.
- “Pre-Release Version”. Submissions must be the pre-release, feature complete version. “Pre-release Version” means your Contest entry is not yet available to the general public as of the date you enter the Contest. “Feature Complete” means the feature set and capabilities of your Contest entry are what you plan to make available to customers, with the exception of bug fixes expected during the final stages of your development cycle. Prototype or "proof-of-concept" applications will be ignored.
- Must run natively on a development iPhone 3G or iPod touch (2nd Generation)
- Must be built and developed using the tools and frameworks provided in the iPhone 3.0 beta SDK.
- Must be accompanied by any required registration codes or serial numbers required to activate full functionality.
- Must be in full compliance with the Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions, and the iPhone SDK Agreement, and, if applicable, the iPhone Developer Program Agreement.
- Must include demo files and/or demo scripts and/or other materials useful for product evaluation and demonstration purposes.
Section VI: Submission Instructions
Contest entries must be received on or before the Contest ending time and date. Entries received after this deadline, for whatever reason, will be disqualified. No exceptions will be made.
- Entries in the MAC OS X LEOPARD DEVELOPER SHOWCASE, BEST MAC OS X SNOW LEOPARD APPLICATION, or BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD STUDENT APPLICATION, categories must be submitted electronically via ftp (File Transport Protocol). Required demo files, sample documents, or scripts should be included in a separate .zip archive, named "Demo Extras.zip", and submitted with your Contest entry. Do not password protect or encrypt your Contest entry or any of these .zip archives.
- Entries in the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE and BEST iPHONE STUDENT APP categories must provide an iTunes App Store URL in the Contest entry form, accompanied by any required usernames, passwords, registration codes, or serial numbers required to access and activate any required functionality.
- Entries in the BEST iPHONE OS 3.0 BETA APP category must be built and submitted using the following instructions:
- Open your project in Xcode.
- Choose Project > Set Active Build Configuration > Release.
- Set the Active SDK within Xcode by choosing Project > Set Active SDK > "Device - iPhone OS 3.0".
- Create a Provisioning Profile in the iPhone Developer Portal that contains the UDID <26756dec0947fddda2aef3cfd996cb071c9aacc1>. This is the UDID for the iPhone used to judge your submission.
- Download the Provisioning Profile file onto your desktop.
- Ensure the Code Signing Identity in the Project Build Settings is set to your name (or the appropriate code-signing identity).
- Choose Build > Build and solve build errors/warnings.
- Choose Run > Run to ensure your application runs as expected on one of your own provisioned devices.
- In the Groups & Files list, open the Products group, control-click on your application, and select "Reveal in Finder". This will reveal your application by switching to the Finder.
- Select your application (the file with the .app suffix) and drag the application to the Desktop.
- Select your application and the Provisioning Profile file (hold down the shift key and select each icon).
- Choose File > Compress.

For identification purposes, all mailed or couriered items sent to the above address, must be accompanied by a printed copy of the Contest entry Confirmation provided upon successful Contest entry.
- Upon receipt, Contest entries (and any special hardware and/or 3rd party software mailed or couriered to the above address) become the property of Apple without monetary compensation to the contestant(s), and will not be returned.
The new archive just created has an additional .zip suffix and is the file that must be submitted electronically via ftp (File Transport Protocol). Demo files, sample documents, or scripts should be included in a separate .zip archive, named "Demo Extras.zip", and submitted with your Contest Entry. Do not password protect or encrypt your Contest Entry or any of these .zip archives.
Section VII: Prizes
The purpose of this Contest is to recognize outstanding developer achievement. This is not a publicity contest or lottery. Only one prize will be awarded to each of the winning Contest Entries in each Contest category, with the exception of the iPHONE DEVELOPER SHOWCASE and MAC OS X LEOPARD DEVELOPER SHOWCASE categories in which Apple reserves the right to award up to four or more winning entries, regardless of whether the Contest entry was produced by a single individual or through the collaboration of a group of individuals.
Prizes will be awarded as follows for entries in the MAC OS X LEOPARD DEVELOPER SHOWCASE, BEST MAC OS X SNOW LEOPARD APPLICATION, or BEST MAC OS X LEOPARD STUDENT APPLICATION categories:

- Winners in each category will receive a trophy and, subject to their agreement to Apple’s graphics policy and guidelines, the right to use the Apple Design Awards logo on the Contest entry’s web site, packaging, and manuals as well as on the winning Contest entry’s related online and printed advertising and promotional materials. The award logo art may be used for the entered version of the winning Contest entry only; it may not be used for subsequent releases. Winners must use the logo art in a manner consistent with Apple’s graphics policy and guidelines, which will be provided.
- Winners will be announced at the WWDC 2009. Winners need not be present to win. Winners will also be notified by email or phone at Apple’s discretion prior to the WWDC 2009. Prizes are non-transferable. There will be no substitution of prizes and no cash awarded in lieu of awards. Prize configurations are not customizable. Winners are responsible for all applicable taxes. Apple reserves the right to substitute the entire prize or any portion of it for a prize of equal or greater value. Delivery times are subject to product availability and determined exclusively by Apple. All prizes and trophies will be awarded. - All federal, state, provincial, local, or other jurisdictional laws and regulations apply. This Contest is void where prohibited or otherwise restricted by law.
- By entering this Contest and/or accepting a prize, the eligible contestant hereby grants permission to Apple or anyone authorized by Apple to use statements, quotes, testimonials, photographs, designs, models, software, and/or any other material(s) provided by eligible contestant as part of the Contest entry, as well as eligible contestant’s name, photograph, likeness, and, if applicable, the name of eligible contestant’s company and affiliation, for advertising, and/or promotional purposes without any additional compensation to eligible contestant unless prohibited by law. The eligible contestant retains ownership of its intellectual property rights in the Contest entry, subject to Apple’s rights to reprint, display, reproduce, perform, and exhibit the Contest entry for advertising and/or promotional purposes. - Apple is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the Contest or in the announcement of the prizes. Apple is not responsible for corrupted (during ftp transmission), lost, late, stolen, damaged, misdirected, or postage due entries. To the extent permitted by law, these terms shall be interpreted, and this Contest shall be conducted, in accordance with California law, without giving effect to choice of law provisions. All disputes concerning these terms and this Contest shall be adjudicated in the federal or state courts having jurisdiction over Santa Clara County, California, USA. If any provision in these Contest Rules is held to be illegal or unenforceable, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that these rules shall otherwise remain in full force and effect and enforceable to the fullest extent permitted by applicable law. - Apple does not accept or consider unsolicited ideas, including ideas new or improved products or technologies. Please do not send any non-public, original creative artwork, suggestions or other works as part of your Contest entry. If, despite our request that you not send us your ideas, you still send them, then regardless of what your submission (or any correspondence accompanying your submission) says, you agree that: (1) your ideas will automatically become the property of Apple, without compensation to you, and (2) Apple can use the ideas for any purpose and in any way, even give them to others.
