Scientific Development Poster Session Abstract Submission and Poster Session Guidelines

Posters should focus on scientific research that was enabled or furthered using Apple platforms and technology. The focus will be on solving a problem through the use of Mac OS X technology and tools.

Abstracts must be received by Friday, May 23, 11:59 PM (PDT). Hardcopy and/or late submission will be rejected.

Abstracts should not exceed 300 words and must include the following content:

  • A brief summary of the project goals, achievements and importance (not the entire poster content).
  • Presenter’s name, telephone, email address, and affiliation

All information can be submitted through the online submission form.

Presenters must hold a WWDC 2008 E-ticket at the time of the poster presentation. Abstracts may be submitted prior to registration.

Presenter must own all right and title in its submission and poster and grant Apple the right to post its abstract, name, contact information, affiliation(s) and poster to the public at WWDC 2008 in San Francisco and on Apple’s web site.

Submissions will be reviewed by members of the conference committee based on originality, quality and relevance.

Acceptance/rejection will be communicated no later than May 31 by 5:00 PM (PDT). Only people with abstracts accepted by Apple may display their poster at WWDC 2008 in San Francisco.

Posters must:

  • Be 3’ high x 4’ wide landscape — not separate sheets hung individually.
  • Consist of material based on the abstract submitted to Apple.
  • Each poster presentation will occupy one-half of one side of a freestanding poster display board. The poster board will accommodate pushpins. Apple will supply push pins. It is suggested that you incorporate grommets into your poster if you don’t want to use pushpins. No tape will be allowed. Walls are not Velcro receptive either.
  • Details regarding poster location, setup, exhibition, and removal time will be announced at a later date. All posters must be removed at the end of the evening’s poster session. Posters remaining on site will not be retained or returned. Presenters are expected to be present at their posters during the poster session exhibition. Apple reserves the right to remove any poster for any reason.
  • Abstracts and associated information regarding the presenter (including name, contact information, affiliation(s), and poster) will be published after WWDC 2008 and must be provided to the conference organizers (in electronic format) on or before Friday, May 23rd, 2008. The text abstracts and contact information will be published exactly as submitted. Apple will control formatting of the publication.

Suggestions for Preparing a Visually Appealing Poster

Here are Apple-created templates (including style recommendations, color palettes, font groups, and column layouts) that you may use to assist you with the creation of your poster.

Layout

  • The width of text boxes and lines of text should contain about 10 to 12 words or 40 characters
  • Avoid overcrowding the poster. Ample use of white space will make the poster more readable

Text

  • Title letters should be not less than 1 inch high and not more than 3 inches high
  • Words should be spelled out, avoiding ambiguous abbreviations
  • Words should run horizontally from left to right, not vertically or diagonally
  • The text, tables and graphics should look integrated by using the same typeface family and style
  • Type should be in upper and lower case in a sans serif face (e.g., Helvetica or Arial) that is clear and precise
  • Use Italics rather than underlining when necessary
  • Avoid blocks of text longer than 8-10 sentences; wherever possible use bulleted sentences rather than blocks of text
  • Lettering for text in the body of the poster should be readable from at least 4 feet away - use text that is at least 3/8-inch in height

Graphics

  • Tables are preferable to graphics for small data sets, whereas charts are preferable for data sets of greater than five or more groups
  • Illustrations and graphs should have accompanying captions
  • Elaborately coded shadings, cross-hatching and colors should be avoided

Printing

  • A matte finish on the posters or uncoated paper provides better visibility and reduces glare
