I'm glad to hear that others have a similar need! I submitted feedback FB16617908 to push for this API request. The workaround you shared is clever, and that should get us taken care of in the meantime! There still is greater benefit to Apple providing the API, as the OS can establish the baseline even if our app hasn't launched yet, and maybe bypass cellular/wifi data restrictions on our app. So we look forward to any developments there!
