in-app purchases with affiliate marketing

How are in app purchases handled with affiliate marketing? If a user purchases an upgrade within an app, will the affiliate get credit for that or just the initial purchase?

Bump. 5 years later would still love an answer to this. We want to credit affiliates with a % of the purchases made through the app. Technically not 'in-app' purchases as we use a stripe like platform. But need a way to attribute user purchases to affiliates.
