Big Sur Mac Crash 4 times in the last 6 hours - 2 no-report and 2 reports

With the upgrade to Big Sur 11.0.1, my iMac Retina 4K 6-core intel core i7 has become highly unstable. Its crashed 4 times in the last 6 hours. 2 times it crashed with no report. The last 2 times I received a report. The odd thing is one time it crashed when I wasn't even using the computer. This time it crashed with Android studio open, safari open, the app store open, and amazon music playing. Otherwise, I wasn't using the computer.

I used to brag to my friends how stable and secure MacOS was. Not quite sure with this release.

Any suggestions?

  • Same issue, has anybody been able to fix it?

    "com.apple.driver.watchdog"

  • Same issue and crash report. Using 2019 MacBookPro 16,1, Big Sur 11.4. No peripherals attached. Microsoft Edge open but inactive. Running NordVPN and Kaspersky. It just quietly went to sleep and restarted. Kind of zen-like. The reference to userspace watchdog, however, triggered my paranoia.

I'm afraid I have no answer, but also experiencing the same thing.

I have a MacPro 6,1 (I know, pretty old...) and it crashes with the panic multiple times a day (only 1 today so far!)

"panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff80149f9a25): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 120 seconds"

I wanted to mention some basic things I've tried:

  • Disconnecting external HDD
  • Disconnecting my LG ultra-wide monitor
  • Disconnecting my (oooold) DELL monitor
  • Changing fan speeds using TGPro (felt like it was doing something useful, but I wasn't convinced it made a difference)
  • Just using 1 app at a time (e.g. Chrome, Outlook)

I can spend hours editing photos on Lightroom or doing sound Editing on Cubase and it can be fine. It feels random. As much as I want to blame the Microsoft Products I've got, it seems to crash when I'm dragging something, or switching desktop a lot, especially if I'm doing lots of things at once. It feels like it can't keep up, even thought the machine is very nippy generally. The screen will freeze but the mouse will continue to work for 30 seconds, then everything freezes for the remaining 90 seconds until it resets itself.

Feels like GPU issue, but I'm no expert. So much for 2 graphics cards being useful huh?

I'm waiting for the new macs to come out, but scared that this is an OS problem and it will continue! I didn't have this problem on my 5,1 Mac and seriously considering going back to it.

Good luck to all of you (us) in getting over this ridiculous unreliability of what was a much loved brand for me.

I get crashes like this every morning since I updated to Big Sur, any time that I’m not at my machine and actively using it for a few hours (or less). Happens regardless of whether I have no apps open at all, lots of apps open, active tasks running / processing data, or even while actively listening to music on my ps4 from mac’s media server.

Note that I upgraded my system from High Sierra to Big Sur a few weeks ago, and had anticipated issues... but OS back to back crashing & rebooting all by itself whenever left unattended is quite the headache. A reboot may re-open all your apps and windows, but CPU intensive tasks/jobs are aborted and have to be restarted all over again -- days of progress lost at times;

I migrated to Apple from PC's over 25 years ago because I needed a stable system...

Crash report after reboot:

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

Sending crash reports all the time..

I have a brand new 2021 iMac that I bought in March of this year (21). This has been happening to me since two months after buying this iMac. I can be running photoshop, after effects, premiere and audition and it crashes. I could be writing an email with nothing else open and it crashes. I could be scrolling thru spotify and it crashes. There is not a program or instance that causes this to crash and I've reiterated this to Apple and they still don't help. I even took it to the Apple store twice for them to do stress testing on it and they say the hardware checks out just fine, but that's clearly not the case when this happens.

I even get a variety of crash reports once it finally reboots, I get the same one from time to time but most of the time it's always something different. I'm beyond frustrated and was on the phone with six different people last Friday for ~90 minutes. Even with Apple Care+ they said there's only a 14 day policy for getting a completely new system, it's total ******** and am beyond frustrated that they have hardly extended out an arm to get this NEW system replaced.

Not an answer, but just noting - as of Nov 7th, 2021, I am also seeing the same issue:

  • Every day I am convinced that an apple makes a terrible product.First, the touchbar flashes, now the computer cannot go to sleep and return correctly from it. And all this after OS updates. They don't want to fix this . Just buy , all problems after buying it's your problem. O! I forgot you can buy apple care, then you will be told this in person by phone, that they cannot help you with anything.

Happening on my mid-2014 MacBook Pro.

MacOS Big Sur 11.6.1

This also started appearing on a Mac mini 2018 that is being used as a fileserver. It might coincide with the upgrade to macOS 11.6 or 11.6.1. Every few weeks to just days I find the machine had restarted with the all too familiar crash report:

userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.remoted in 180 seconds
[...]

There were no such issues with 10.15; connected peripherals have not changed.

Add me to the list of people suffering from this. I'm on an M1 Max macbook pro. I never had issues on previous computers. I migrated from a mac pro running Catalina, so maybe that has something to do with it?

I took it into an Apple-certified service tech, and they said it was connected to Rosetta 2, and claimed to fix it by reinstalling Rosetta 2. Still have the issue though.

Also, can anyone out there make sense of the crash reports? Everyone keeps posting 'em, but no one seems to be able to read them. Mine have been different every time.

  • I set up a new M1 Max yesterday, and I've been having the same issue. So far, it seems only to happen if I am copying files to a NAS via SMB and I leave the machine alone until the display turns off. When I come back and wake it up, the machine has rebooted and presented the watchdog issue in the logs. I did a long copy from a SSD over USB-C, and it did not panic. I'm running Monterey 12.1.

I've been having this problem now for 4 days. https://stephenmonro.wordpress.com/2022/01/24/so-the-i7-macmini-crashed-today-bigsur-11-6-2-20g314/ Still not having any luck either.

Up until now, it's been running flawlessly.

Just to keep anyone updated, I did have a breakthrough late last night, where the latest Big Sur update solved my issue. You have to boot in to Safe mode, and then check for system updates. I've tried to document it a little here: https://stephenmonro.wordpress.com/2022/01/24/so-the-i7-macmini-crashed-today-bigsur-11-6-2-20g314/

Are you subscribing to Adobe suite? My issue went away by quitting the programs Adobe runs in the background even after you’ve quit its programs. It maxed out my RAM memory.

Quit any all Adobe programs. Go into Activity Monitor app to and manually select and quit Adobe cloud helper, everything w an Adobe logo next to it.

The same issue happened to me (Macbook air mid 2013) Crash several times a day for specific scenario. It was very stable until I updated to Big Sur.

Hi everyone! Any idea of why this might happen?

I have the same issue, though I have a feeling it is from how old my Macbook is at this point (Bought in early 2016). It started crashing today and crashed about 8 times in the span of a few hours. At first I thought it was an issue with the game (been playing Minecraft) but I changed so many things to optimise it and nothing changed. I keep only the game open and no other app, lowest graphic settings, keeping my Macbook cool, restarting the world here and there, ... . But whatever I did it continues crashing and giving me this:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff801b97999f): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from WindowServer in 120 seconds service: logd, total successful checkins since load (2260 seconds ago): 227, last successful checkin: 0 seconds ago service: WindowServer, total successful checkins since load (2230 seconds ago): 211, last successful checkin: 120 seconds ago service: opendirectoryd, total successful checkins since load (2260 seconds ago): 226, last successful checkin: 0 seconds ago

I'm having the same problem. I have been frozen 7 times in less than a couple of hours. Is there any solution to this? The problem started after connecting another monitor to the imac 27 5k 2019 with big sur
