Read Me for VolumeToBSDNode 1.1

Shows how to iterate across all mounted volumes and retrieve the BSD node name (/dev/disk*) for each volume. That information is used to determine if the volume is on a CD, DVD, or some other storage media.

Sample Requirements

-------------------

This sample requires Mac OS X and Xcode 2.2.1 or later to build. The sample runs on Mac OS X 10.2 or later.

About the Sample

----------------

The sample uses the Core Services File Manager to iterate across all local volumes. Each volume's BSD node name is fetched, then the I/O Kit APIs are used to find the IOMedia object representing the volume's media. From that I/O Kit can return information about the kind of media on which the volume resides: CD, DVD, or other generic media such as a hard disk.

Occasionally the need arises to find the volumes mounted from a given IOMedia object. The techniques shown in this sample can be used in reverse: get the BSD node name from the IOMedia object, then look for a match among all of the mounted volumes.

Using the Sample

Simply build and run the sample. Output is sent to the console.

Insert a CD or DVD and note how the output of the sample reflects the kind of media in the optical drive.
