Close Your Rings Challenge

Get the motivation you need to close your rings on Apple Watch every day, even during WWDC. All participants will receive a commemorative Close Your Rings Challenge pin on Friday, June 8 at McEnery Convention Center.

How It Works

Earn points each day, from Sunday, June 3 at 12:00 a.m. to Thursday, June 7 at 11:59 p.m., by wearing your Apple Watch and closing your Activity rings. Simply download the Challenges app on iPhone and allow Challenges to access Health app data, which includes data from your Activity rings. Work as a team of four with fellow WWDC18 attendees to earn as many points as you can. If everyone on your team closes their rings that day, you'll get team bonus points (in addition to individual bonus points). All participants will receive a commemorative Close Your Rings Challenge pin on Friday, June 8 at McEnery Convention Center.

How to Participate

The WWDC18 Close Your Rings Challenge is open to attendees of WWDC18. Before you begin, make sure you’re running the latest release version of watchOS on your Apple Watch and iOS on your iPhone. You’ll also need to install the Challenges app on your iPhone.

  1. Sign up to receive your unique invitation code.
  2. Open the Challenges app and sign in with your Lose it! account, or create a free account.
  3. Enter your invitation code, tap join, and agree to the terms.
  4. Enter your weight to find out what your new Move ring calorie goal will be for this challenge. Make sure to change your Move goal on your Apple Watch to match. Firmly press the Apple Watch screen in the Activity app and choose "Change Move Goal”.
  5. Choose to create a team, join a specific team, or get randomly assigned to team. All teams consist of four people.
  6. When prompted, allow Challenges to access Health app data. Challenges can read and write exercise data and other custom goal values that you set up in the Health app on iOS.
  7. Verify your data throughout the week to make sure you’re getting credit for your workouts.

Daily Goals

Move ring

Goal: customized depending on weight entered

This ring measures how many active calories you've burned. Active calories are calories that you burn by standing or moving around.

  • You'll earn 1 point for each 1/12 of the Move ring you complete.
  • This ring is capped at 36 points.

Exercise ring

Goal: 30 minutes

This ring measures how many minutes of brisk activity you've completed. Each minute of movement equaling or exceeding the intensity of a brisk walk counts toward your daily Exercise and Move goals. Any activity below the intensity of a brisk walk counts only toward your daily Move goal.

  • You'll earn 1 point for each 1/12 of the Exercise ring you complete.
  • This ring is capped at 36 points (90 minutes).

Stand ring

Goal: one minute per hour for 12 hours

The Stand (or Roll) ring measures when you've moved for at least one minute in an hour.

  • You’ll earn 1 point for each 1/12 of the Stand ring you complete.
  • This ring is capped at 14 points (standing for one minute per hour for 14 hours)

Bonus Points

Individual bonus points: An individual player will earn 12 extra points for closing all three rings on the same day. This is earned only once per day, and no additional points are awarded for closing a ring more than once.

Team bonus points: If one person on your team closes all three on the same day, you'll receive 4 bonus points for each teammate who also closes all three rings that day, with a maximum of 12 team bonus points each day.

Teams

Joining or Creating a Team

Teams can have a maximum of four people, and all must be WWDC18 attendees. If you start a team but don't have a total of four people, you'll get a notice to invite more WWDC18 attendees. You can invite as many attendees as you would like, and the first three to respond will be on your team.

If you choose to be assigned to a team, you'll either be placed on an existing team or be placed on a new Free Agent team. If you are the first person on a Free Agent team, you'll be assigned the administrator role. Administrators get to choose the team name and team picture.

If your team has less than four people once the challenge starts, you can still participate but won't earn as many team bonus points when all team members close their rings.

Changing or Leaving a Team

As long as the challenge is open, you can change teams. However, if you leave a team you will lose all of the team bonus points that you earned with that team. To leave a team, open the Challenges app on iPhone and tap the name of the team you'd like to leave. Then, tap the arrow icon in the top right corner of the screen.

You will not be able to remove someone from your team. However, you can leave your current team, start a new team and mark it as "Invite Only" so that only people you invite can join.

Features

The Challenges app on iPhone provides a detailed look at the entire challenge leaderboard as well as your team's status and ranking, lets you view and post comments to your teammates and everyone in the challenge, and shows you how you're getting points. In addition, the app provides the following features to help you and your team close your rings.

  • Nudges: You can send motivating nudges to your teammates by tapping their name in the Challenges app on Apple Watch.
  • Complications: Add your daily point total view and quick access to the Challenges app to your watch face. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap Complications, and select Challenges.
  • Dock: Add your team's total point view, challenge placement, days left in the challenge, and quick access to the Challenges app to your dock. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap Dock, and select Challenges.
  • Watch face: Change your watch face to one of the new Activity ring designs. This allows you to see your ring progress at a glance.

Additional Details

There's an exclamation point in the Challenges app: You will see an exclamation point (!) in Challenges if your Move goal on Apple Watch does not match the Move goal for this challenge. You can always have a higher goal than what's assigned to you, but make sure that you're at least completing the move goal for this challenge.

Apple Watch doesn't show the Challenges app: Make sure that you're running the latest versions of iOS and watchOS. It may also help to restart your Apple Watch and iPhone.

The Activity ring data doesn't sync with the Challenges app: Confirm that Challenges has access to Health app data by tapping Sources, then Challenges on iPhone. If you're still having issues, delete the Challenges app and download it again from the App Store. When completing the installation flow, agree to sync data with the Health app.

I forgot to wear my Apple Watch: This challenge is based on the information collected from the Activity app on Apple Watch. Information cannot be entered manually.

Privacy: The only information Apple receives from the Challenges app is your passkey and your point total.
