New and Noteworthy

All changes below only refer to “Java for OS X 2012-006” for OS X v10.8 and v10.7 unless otherwise noted.

Removal of Java SE 6 applet plug-in

This release removes access to the Java SE 6 applet plug-in in all web browsers. Users who require Java applets may click on the “Missing Plug-in” placeholder on a web page, which prompts them to download the Java 7 Runtime Environment (JRE) from Oracle directly.

Removal of Java SE 6 Web Start launching

The release removes access to the Java SE 6 Web Start launcher. Opening JNLP files now prompts users to download the Java 7 JRE from Oracle. Once installed, the JRE handles all double-clicked JNLP file launches.

Command-line tool version priority change

The Java command-line tools in /usr/bin (java, javac, javah, jstack, etc.), now default to choosing the highest JDK version installed. Once a Java 7 JDK is installed, the only way to access the path to the Java SE 6 command-line tools is to request the 1.6 version from the /usr/libexec/java_home tool.

Removal of Java Preferences.app

The /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app is removed upon installing this update. Its functionality is no longer required to configure applet plug-in settings or to change the preferred JVM order for command-line tools and applications.
