[UIViewController prepareInterstitialAds] throws SIGABRT

I'm calling

[UIViewController prepareInterstitialAds];

In the AppDelegate didFinishLaunchingWithOptions, as per many examples on the internet.

This is resulting in a SIGABRT saying:

+[UIViewController prepareInterstitialAds]: unrecognized selector sent to class 0x110d8f3f0

iAd integration sample projects are desperately outdated. Any help is appreciated.
