We are reviewing the navigation design of a modal sheet in our iPhone app and would appreciate guidance on the Human Interface Guidelines and adoption of Liquid Glass.
The sheet contains a navigation flow. Our proposed header places the current view’s title immediately next to the Back chevron, with a Close button on the trailing side:
┌──────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ ─── │
│ ‹ Current view title × │
├──────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ │
│ Current view content │
│ │
└──────────────────────────────────────────────┘
In this example:
- “Current view title” represents the title of the view currently displayed, not the title of the previous view or the destination of the Back button.
- The Back button navigates to the previous view within the sheet.
- The Close button dismisses the entire sheet.
- The title is intended to be a separate, noninteractive label, rather than part of the Back button’s tappable area.
We understand that the traditional UINavigationItem.ItemStyle.navigator layout centers the current view’s title, while the Back button may display the previous view’s title. Our concern is whether the proposed layout could make the current title look like the Back button’s destination label.
We have also found the following documentation:
- HIG: Toolbars — Item groupings describes a leading arrangement where navigation controls are followed by the view title.
UINavigationItem.ItemStyle.editorprovides a leading-aligned title and a Back chevron, although its documented use case is viewing or editing documents.leftItemsSupplementBackButtonallows custom leading items to appear alongside the system Back button.
We would like to distinguish technical feasibility from recommended design practice:
-
For a general-purpose iPhone sheet, is this arrangement consistent with the HIG, or is a centered title preferred? Are the leading-title examples above intended primarily for document interfaces or iPad layouts?
-
If this arrangement is appropriate, what visual separation or accessibility treatment is recommended to distinguish the current view’s title from the Back button’s label?
-
When adopting Liquid Glass, what is the recommended way to preserve this arrangement? One implementation we are considering is retaining the system Back button and placing a
UILabelin a customUIBarButtonItemusingleftItemsSupplementBackButton. Would this be appropriate, or should we use a different system configuration?
Our goal is to preserve the placement of the current title while adopting standard system button appearances and behavior. We do not need to preserve the existing header’s exact background or spacing.
Any guidance or relevant official examples would be appreciated.
