Why Apple has created it's own 3d model format? What are the benefits of using .usdz format in comparison to .obj or .dae formats? I just try to understand is it enough to use just .obj or it will be better to use .usdz
Thanks for any help!

Hi,
usdz is the compressed mobile optimised format of Pixar's Universal Scene Description (USD), and is an open format which is becoming widely adopted across the 3D industry.
USD in general is much broader in scope than obj or dae in that it allows complex scenes including shaders, lights and cameras, models, animations to be included in the file (although USDz/ARKit don't support all of these yet).
Also, being an open standard, you can load USD files in most 3D apps now from blender to Houdini, and all the main vendors and studios are helping develop and support USD. It's far from an Apple standard, and as a format is much more forward looking that .obj and dae, and more comprehensive than alembic.
