Annoying CloudKit Caches eats up 250GB of storage.

Hi guys, Never come across this issue when I switch to a new 2021 MBP 14" M1PRO.(base setup)

Happens quite often when I'm saving my blender file, pops up an error saying not enough space. (where after migration I should have about 250GB still.)

After going through the storage management tab I came across the " Library - Caches - Cloudkit - com.apple.bird" is eating up 251 GB of storage.

I've tried to delete the folder, it pops back right away. and gradually increase it's size till it's full again.

Strangely, if I leave the laptop overnight, sometimes the storage will clean up by itself again.

Yet, it will continue a behavioral loop on daily basis to a point it's not useable for a new MBP.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be or any solutions?

greatly appreciated!!

This continues to happen to me as well. Including the overnight cleanup, the deletion and repopulation of the .bird cache, and its constant file size increase. It is rendering my laptop useless. I have talked to tech support three separate times on this. We have deleted it (it comes back by itself instantly). We have reimaged my computer with an existing OS file. And, we completely wiped and installed a fresh OS ... none of those acts help. Eager to know if anyone else has figured something out that works as well!

This is killing me, as well. I got iCloud+ and it's proven to be precisely the opposite of what I upgraded for: to free up computer space. Really frustrating.

This thread describes my experience exactly. I have a MBP with 1TB internal SSD, and iCloud 2TB storage. I get the looping behavior, and it makes my MacBook entirely useless for any type of media work (photo video etc), because the computer fills itself up to capacity at any random time and then starts throwing errors. If I "fix" it manually by cleaning out CloudKit and Bird bloat it just recurs later. Logging out and back in to iCloud Drive does not help--just repeats later. I should have, as of today, 632GB free space, and today I have watched it go from less than 1GB free to 632GB free then back down to 250GB free, all for no apparent reason. Lots of battery consumption from cloud daemon as well. Dare I say iCloud is jeopardizing the MacOS experience in this state?

Yes, there are those options that allow some algorithm to manage your free space for you if you opt in to all of them, but that mentality is antithetical to any sort of serious creative work, and it's exactly the opposite of the classic Mac user, who frequently has some sort of media project that requires the local disk. So those options are a no go for any serious user.

I have the exact same model and the same problem, with iCloud 2TB an my Mac is allways full !! It´s driving me crazy. Did you find any solution?

I have the exact same model and the same problem, with iCloud 2TB an my Mac. This is ridiculous. I lost my entire day because my Mac refuses to open any video editing app. Come on APPLE!!!!!!! FIX IT.

Hi guys, did anyone find the solution please? I have 2023 14'' MacBook Pro with 500 GB and 2TB iCloud and I'm constantly on less than 1 GB of free space according to Disk Utility (Storage in System Settings shows 53 GB of free space though). Mail won't work, VM with Parallels won't work, it's killing me.. Please help.

I have the same problem. Actually I hate icloud behavior. There is no option to customise which files to keep only in the cloud drive, no option to stop downloading or uploading once started, no option to show the downloading or uploading files, no option to customise the location of the icloud drive on the storage. Moreover, it looks keep backup versions in the storage!! It is really annoying. I like OneDrive but unfortunately I am stuck with apple echosystem.

Has anyone figured out this issue yet? I'm honestly hating my experience with iCloud so much due to this exact issue. Yesterday I cleared 60GB+ by moving all my files and images and everything to my Google Drive since that seems to work perfectly without any issues for the past 5+ years for me. And then just now I got on my computer and I'm getting warnings for having less than 1GB of space left! WTH! The worst part is that 301GB of my 500GB total disk space is eaten up by System Data, and 80GB of that is eaten up specifically by Cloudkit.

Besides that, yesterday I suddenly saw that all of my important legal documents and documents for work that I have in my Documents folder which can ONLY be linked in iCloud literally just disappeared! I had to specifically go into iCloud and luckily there was a duplicate Documents folder for some reason and that one had all my files, but now the Documents folder on my computer doesn't have any of the files I need, it just has a bunch of empty folders for some reason.

I feel like I cannot trust iCloud at all and I have absolutely been having the worst experience with it rendering my laptop useless, and I need my laptop for software development work! It's literally preventing me from making a living and it's making my life hell and so frustrating.

Please, if someone figures out this issue, let us know. Thanks!
