Internet stops working after idle time when using VPN on iOS 26 beta

We have observed an internet access issue after the device enters idle mode on iOS 26 beta 9. Although the Ivanti Secure Access Client appears connected, users are unable to access any resources (internet or intranet) after unlocking the device from idle. When we check the log socket connection looks not disrupted, packets are tunnelled but no resource access. Split tunnel enabled and proxy PAC configured. This was observed on both iOS and iPadOS 26 beta.

Steps to reproduce: Connecting to the internet, launching the Ivanti client, locking the device, and then unlocking it after a brief period of idle. The issue occurs when the VPN remains connected but no resources are accessible.

OK. That’s probably the best next step here. It’s possible that one customer has some weird environmental factor that’s causing this. OTOH, if you do see it reported by lots of other customers, that’ll give you some context for your own attempts to reproduce the problem.

Reading your post I wasn’t sure whether this is a VPN product that you’re developing or one that you’re just trying to use. Please clarify.

We are the VPN developer, and this issue has been reported by one of our customers using our VPN product. It is reproducible only on iOS 26.

Update: We are observing strange behavior with iOS 26, where there is noticeable slowness when connecting to a VPN server in a distant location. For example, connecting from India to a US VPN server is very slow, while connections to an India-based server work fine and vice-versa. We tested the same use case on iOS 18 and found that both servers work without any issues.

You seem to be reporting two problems:

VPN fails after idle sleep.
VPN has performance problems.

For both of these, are you debugging the issue based on reports coming in from users? Or are you able to reproduce them yourself?

This is a customer setup, and we are unable to reproduce the issue locally in our lab. The customer is experiencing unusual behavior they report that VPN performance is fine when connecting to a nearby VPN server, but it slows down when connecting to a server in a distant location. We have asked them to check their network and infrastructure on their end, as we believe this may not be a VPN issue, they are looking into it.

For the first issue where the VPN fails, our investigation suggests that the socket enters a bad state once the device is locked and extension goes to sleep. It is neither timing out nor sending data, which indicates the socket enters a bad state and the resource is not accessible.

Note: Both issues are not reproducible on iOS 18.
