Balearic Islands

I would like to report a persistent Apple Maps data issue affecting the Spanish (Spain) version of Apple Maps, especially in the Balearic Islands.

Apple Maps is displaying several official place names incorrectly, including municipalities, towns, neighbourhoods and local geographic names. In some cases, Apple Maps also shows duplicated or non-existent neighbourhoods, or classifies neighbourhoods incorrectly as towns/cities.

The problem is not isolated to one place. It affects several areas of the Balearic Islands, particularly Mallorca and Menorca. Some examples include incorrect or outdated forms such as Mahon / Mahón instead of Maó, Ciudadela instead of Ciutadella de Menorca, and other place names that do not match the official names used by Spanish geographic authorities.

These names should follow official geographic sources such as the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) and the official cartographic data of the Balearic Islands. The issue appears specifically in the Spanish (Spain) version of Apple Maps.

I have tried to report these errors many times using the built-in “Report an Issue” function in Apple Maps, including official references and screenshots. However, the reports are repeatedly rejected with the same generic response: “The specific change could not be made.”

This reporting function does not seem to work properly for different types of map data. It fails not only for official city and town names, but also for neighbourhoods, duplicated or non-existent areas, and POIs. Even when the correction is supported by official geographic sources or clear local evidence, the reports are rejected without a useful explanation or a real review process.

We appreciate your interest in participating in the forums! These forums are for questions about developing software and accessories for Apple platforms. Your question seems related to a consumer feature and is better suited for the Apple Support Communities

Given that, you could also file a bug for the map team to take action.

This is a developer support forum, for programming questions, theoretically.

I think what you're seeing is a side effect of the area's autonomous and multilingual nature. When I look at those islands from my Canadian English context, the names that I see are the ones that you say are correct. Goggle agrees with Apple for the most part. Google shows just Ciutadella, not Ciutadella de Menorca like Apple.

However, if you are viewing from a Spanish-language perspective, then you are probably going to see the Spanish version of all of these place names, not the local Catalan versions. In certain regions, this being one of them, online map systems have to carefully check who is looking at a map to keep everyone happy.

@Etresoft Thank you for your input. My intention is not to dismiss this issue, is to route it correctly, as it is of great importance to me as Catalan is my first language. My primary concern is ensuring that the issue is addressed to rectify the language. However, this is not a framework or programming language; it is a regional matter that can only be addressed by the Maps Team. if is an issue with. the locale of the device or a regional Apple Maps issue.

Thanks for your input and understanding.

An important inconsistency is that Ibiza appears to display many official place names correctly, while Menorca does not. For example, Apple Maps shows names in Ibiza according to their official Catalan forms, but in Menorca it still displays outdated or incorrect Spanish forms such as Mahon / Mahón instead of Maó, or Ciudadela instead of Ciutadella de Menorca. This inconsistency suggests that Apple Maps is not applying the same naming criteria across all the Balearic Islands in the Spanish (Spain) locale.

I have also discussed this issue with people from the Balearic Government / official cartographic institutions, because the problem affects official geographic information. However, even they have not been able to find a clear and effective communication channel with Apple Maps to resolve these data issues.

Gracies Josep

Please make sure you file a bug for the Apple Maps team to review all that, they'll appreciate your detailed descriptions of the labels and the language.

I can assure you the bug created will be routed to the correct team, please just drop the FB number here after filing.
