I think it's also about setting the proper access rights for your user and its devices in Users & Access portal and associating it to a particular app. If everything's set up right in Users & Access portal, the device should appear under the list when creating the Ad Hoc provisioning profile and when you add such a profile to your device according to the answer from above, it should work just fine.

If you get an error "Failed to install one or more provisioning profiles on the device." most probably the provisioning profile that you're trying to add is not meant for your device. You can see a list of available provisioning profiles that you can download from Apple developer portal and you can also add one if there's no profile that suits your needs. The profile that should be added to your device should be Ad Hoc and your device must be in the list of available devices for that profile.
