Can't open project.pbxproj Xcode project file on El Capitan

Since installing Xcode 7 beta and upgrading my OS to El Capitan, I am unable to view the project.pbxproj file (by clicking on the project settings at the top of the file navigator in my .xcworkspace) in a not-plaintext format. Sometimes I get a message "Unable to open project.pbxproj". It just renders as plaintext.

The interesting thing is that even on Xcode 6.3.2 I am unable to view the project settings, which makes me think it's an El Capitan issue. My colleagues on Yosemite do not have this issue.

I am able to view the project settings of other .xcworkspace's, just not for my particular workspace which is a large, years-old project, whose plain text project.pbxproj is over 22,000 lines long.

Anybody else have this issue? It's quite a blocker for me at the moment.

Wow, figured it out and feeling stupid. It looks like the last time I had opened Xcode I was using the Version Editor instead of the Standard Editor and Xcode had stored this state. It was trying to open the project file with the Version Editor.

Solution: Select Standard Editor in the top right.
