Phone Crash and unpaired from Watch

My iPhone runing iOS9 beta crashed and as a result it's no longer paired with my Apple Watch which is running WatchOS 2. I have tried to re-pair it using the watch app but my Watch still thinks its paird to my Phone and shows the dissconnected icon. I have tried to reset the watch through Settings > General > Reset but it's telling me I need to unpair it from my Phone as the activation Lock is in place.

Are there any other steps I can take to reset/Remove the Activation Lock apart from taking the Watch to my Local Apple Store?

Hi Malcinator,

  1. Go to iCloud.com and disable "Find my iPhone" for your device - this will wipe it.
  2. You should now be able to pair your watch as a new device.

Let me know if this answers your question 🙂

Max.

HI,

I have been to icloud and find my device already, it was the first place I could think of to visit. My Apple watch isn't listed there only my Phone etc.

Daft question but would removing my Iphone help to solve the issue. I don't think it would as the two are no longer paired. But should I do it anyway?

You'd be better off doing it from your phone from Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone. Switching it off from iCloud.com can wipe your device.

Ok, I have turned off find my phone through the Setting of the phone.

As my Watch and Phone are no longer paired I'm not sure this would really work.

Did you say you've tried, on your Apple Watch, doing Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings?

And have you tried a hard-reset of your watch by holding both the home/crown button and the side button until the watch powers off?

Yeah I have. There is a message there telling me I need to unpair my watch first and then I need to unpair the watch as the activation lock is in place.

Good tip. Didn't work though.

Okay, one more suggestion:

  1. Connect your Apple Watch to its Apple Magnetic Charging Cable.
  2. Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider.
  3. Hold a Force Press on the Power Off option and tap Erase all content and settings.

Also, turning off Find my iPhone for your phone was not so illogical. From the WatchOS 2 Beta 5 Release Notes:

Activation Lock:

Activation Lock is enabled on your Apple Watch if you have Find My iPhone enabled on your iPhone.

Note: A device has to be offline in order for you to remove it.

  1. Launch Safari or your web browser of choice on any computer.
  2. Go to icloud.com
  3. Enter your Apple ID username or password.
  4. Click on Find my iPhone.
  5. Enter your Apple ID password again.
  6. Click on All Devices.
  7. Click on the offline device you want to remove.
  8. Click on Remove from account.

HI,

Thanks for that tip Max108.

My iClould and Find my Phone shows NO offline devices. My watch is not listed as a device there.

Frustrating.

However... I did log in to my iCloud Account and Settings. There I could see my Watch listed as a Device. I have removed it from there.

I will wait for a while and see if this does indeed solve my issue. The first look still showed the messages regading the Activation Lock on my Watch at Settings > Reset.

Try https://beta.icloud.com - they sometimes trial new features there.

Max108,

I have no watch currently listed as per my previous post.

I'm not sure how the Activation Lock can be removed as the Watch pulls it's internet connection from the iPhone and frustratingly I don't have that connection in place. I did read that WatchOS does give the Watch some indipendance from the iPhone and also that the Watch would connect to Wireless Access Points but I couldn't find out if those Access Pointes needed to be know to the Watch or not. I have set up an open Wi-Fi network at home inthe hopes that it would try to use it. So far nothing though.

Thanks for you assistance though.
