iOS 9 restore issues (corrupt or not compatible)

Hi there,

I've posted a question here before a got a couple of replies but it was deleted before saw them for some reason.

Anyway i'll try again, i'm a public tester of IOS9 and really need some help.

On Sunday i had a genius appointment to look at my Iphone's front camera. In prep for this i made sure i backed my iphone up and reverted it back to ios8 incase they swapped any of the hardware over.

When i came to restore my files from my previous day's backup it didn't show in itunes. I thought about this and realised that i needed to reinstal ios9 then try to restore. I tried this and to my surprise, the days earlier backup showed up. I started the restore function but i received an error to say itunes could not restore because the backup was corrupt or not compatible. I've download iBackupbot and can't get anything at all transferred over. I'm currently wokrking with a backup that i did just under a year so as you can imagine, i've lost a lot of information (even though my backup is still there on ITunes). I'm wondering if this is to do with the different beta numbers?

Is there any way you can help me? Even just to get a small amount of info out of the backup like contacts and photos would be helpful. A full restore would obviously be more disireable.

Please help!

Hi Gary.

It sounds like you may have already tried the steps I posted for this issue, but they have worked for many others so, if they don't work for you, please tell me at exactly which point in these steps your experience differs from what is described:

  1. Find your Backup:
    • Mac:
      • Open iTunes and go to “Preferences”
      • Choose the “Devices” tab to see a list of current iOS Backups on the computer
      • Select the backup you want to make a copy of and right-click it, choosing “Show in Finder”
      • The backup chosen from iTunes will automatically be selected in a new Finder window – note the name will be some alphanumeric jumble like “eef541c486577cbef71123c” and not anything particularly intuitive
    • Windows:

      Search files for %appdata%

      • Double-click these folders: Apple Computer > MobileSync > Backup.
      • Work out which is the backup you want from the date.
  2. Duplicate the folder, or just copy the folder to a new location (this is a backup of the backup just in case)
  3. Open an iTunes backup manager app (iBackupBot is free and works for this purpose).
  4. Navigate to your iPhone's backup (the original one, not the copy).
  5. Nivigate into the following folder: HomeDomain/Library/Preferences/
  6. Delete com.apple.coreduetd.batterysaver.state.plist
  7. Quit the app, return to iTunes and try again to restore to the backup you just modified.

Max.

HI Max, Thanks for your reply. You're right, i saw your advice on another thread. I can't find the com.apple.coreduetd.batterysaver.state.plist file on iBackupBot. I've search the encrypted backup for 'battery' and it finds nothing. It sounds so promising too!

There is another (folder this time) that caused the same issue - the HomeKitDomain folder - but I was under the impression that it only affected earlier betas. You could try deleting that one anyway.

Still no joy. The iphone is actually getting further into the the 'restore' process though. Previously the iphone wouldn't tell me it was restoring but now looks like it tells me it's going to restore then the same error appears. So frustrating! I'm at a loss!

There's a 3rd party "Corrupt Backup Recovery" tool that has a free trial version and a paid version. There are reports on Apple Communities that the paid version works in situations like yours and, to be fair, it proabably does. However the free trial version claims to analyse the corrupt backup for you and tell you whats wrong before prompting you to fork out for the full version. I'm not sure that the software has been updated to deal with iOS 9 backups, but you could run the free analysis and post the results in case they're helpful:

Hi Gary,

This is a long shot - but can you go into your iTunes >Pref > Dev and in the list of backups identify which was your ios 9 backup? if so- quick! (lol) archive it (using a control tap, or a right click on a mouse) - this at least should preserve the backup if you haven't written over it with a new backup.

Then...(presuming that went ok) - unplug your device and wipe it manually - and proceed as usual...

short of that, if you have any on time machine in that days version of the Library >application Support> mobile backups etc?

each time you copy a Time Machine backup to your active library foler mentioned above-lease make sure evrything already there has been archived, and as soon as you copy it in- archive it too...

This strategy helped me restore an ios9 backup:

wiped my device

used itunes to restore as new to 8.4.1 (latest ios released)

installed (again) ios9 to my iphone, as new and

then used itunes again to restore my ios9 backed up files

- mind you, I did this with the currently latest version of itunes 12.2.2.25

Good luck, as I dont know how stable any of that is.

Hello all, thanksyou for all your advice. I eventually went for the Corrupt Backup Recovery tool and surprisingly it worked. Had to pay but it's worth it to cut all of the hours trying to get the data back. Thanks for the suggestion. The only thing now is that my iphone is being a little akward when trying to add music from my itunes. It's saying it's there but the disappears when i unplug the iphone. I feel a restore is needed but i'll see how the actual version of IOS9 does when it's available next week. I'm hoping it kicks it into touch!

Hi again 🙂

I'm glad that the Recovery tool worked for you - since it solved the problem, you can mark your question as answered by clicking [Correct Answer] on the post with the link to the tool. The question then goes green so that others searching with the same problem can see there is a fix.

I had the same issues. I worked with Apple Chat and couldn't get it restored. I used Decipher Backup Repair and its perfect!

Cracked it! I lost a ton of time, trying all the alternatives and solutions above with no luck. I also tried different methods and all kinds of third party applications (even considered paying for the paid version after seeing great reviews) but it really took hours and most of the times the result ended up in pure failure.

However, and after reading a lot, I noticed one detail that maybe I gave for granted or did not pay enough attention to -- basically it was one of the first steps before going into the full process of restore, which was make sure you had a proper functioning USB cable (seems obvious, right?). I did the backup flawlessly using an original USB cable BUT when running the restore, I always tried using an Amazon cable. It was basically one of my last shots, but tried using again an original Apple USB cable, which did run the restore completly and smoothly... after a 50 min I had my iPhone back with all my precious backed up data. Hope this helps for frustrated peeps out there! (did for me!)

The common problem of iPhone data recovery that is user have no any idea to restore lost data back , or they don't know how to operation the recovery tool to do ,in this way, once the deleted data is covered with some new data on iPhone , they have no chance to recover the lost data on phone , no matter what recovery tools do you use, unless you have backup for the lost data before deleting, then you can access data from iTunes backup

Hey,

Have you seen this article, How To Recover data from Corrupt BKF Files In 7 Easy Steps.

They have mentioned a free manual technique to recover corrupt Backup files.
