You do have to buy a Mac. It doesn't have to be anything extremely new or fancy, however. My development Mac is a stock 2014 MacBook Air 128GB. Its performance is not exactly top-notch, but it works just fine for me. You can get a brand-new Mac Mini (the entry-level Mac) starting at $500. Used and refurbished machines are usually just as good and can be a lot less expensive.
