Apple TV not recognized by iTunes

Just got my dev kit in the mail and tried setting it up. When I plug it into my TV it enters recovery mode and shows the iTunes symbol.

However, when I connect it to iTunes via the provided USB cable it doesn't actually appear in the list. I tried with two laptops (one running 10.10 and one running 10.11) on iTunes 12.3. I then tried doing it through Xcode 7.1 instead but it couldn't see the device either.

The only troubleshooting advice the setup guide provided was to force it to enter recovery mode but it's already in recovery mode. I've also tried basic things like resetting the Apple TV.

Do I have a dud?

Using Xcode Version 7.0 (7A220), assuming the apple tv showed up in system profiler, the apple tv is connected and editable, including changing the name and viewing the identifier.

Yeah. It worked for Xcode 7.1.

Could everyone both who have this problem and not, reply back as to which version of OS X they are running please? I am running latest Yosemite production build (Not El Capitan!) - No mention that tvOS requires beta of el Capitan, but I'm wondering now. Everything is working as expected EXCEPT this issue where AppleTV DOES NOT show up in iTunes Devices or Xcode 7.1 devices after Restore, successful setup on iPhone wiht 7.1, etc. This is a show stopper that we're all trying to find out a work around for. Thanks in advance for all those sharing your OS X build and whether you do or do not see the AppleTV in iTunes Devices and Xcode 7.1 as a device to build to.

Why is this a show stopper? I had same problems, and AppleTV still does not show in iTunes, but I am able to compile a test project and install an app on the TV. Clearly this is not stopping development.

UUID can be found in XCode's Devices window. When you try to compile a project with this "?" device chosen, Xcode will try to "fix" the issue with device profiles, as it usually does, and everyhing will work fine. Apple TV still shows as "?" in Devices in Xcode, but it is reckognized as an Apple TV. Hope this helps.

You are using the black cable, right?

I thought I had the same problem, where iTunes wouldn't recognize my Apple TV. However, I simply did not "click" the USB-C cable into the Apple TV fully. Since this is my first use of a USB-C cable, I didn't realize I had to apply a little extra force to hear the "click". One I did that, and the cable was fully inserted, it appeared immediatley within iTunes. Then option-click the restore button in iTunes, select the tvOS beta that you downloaded, and you should be in good shape. Enjoy.

Does anyone have a fix for this - I guess I can restore again if necessary, but the restore page isn't showing the UDID either...

Happens here too: device shows up in System Report screen but not in iTunes, and on different Macs. My best guess is that's a bug in iTunes SW.

Get the latest OSX and iTunes before you begin. Then click options-Restore. Everything went smoothly for me.

Hold Menu + Play/Pause on the remote to get the Apple TV in recovery mode, then restore via iTunes.

This.

Holding down Menu & Play/Pause worked for me when restarting everything and messing with cables didn't.

I had a slightly different problem where iTunes 10.3.0.44 would not see the Apple TV after the initial tvOS restore. But the Xcode 7.1 beta did see it, and let me get the UUID to proceed. This was using a MacBook Air running 10.10.5.

Try today's tvOS update...

I was trying to put the new TVOS beta in. I could not update from the device for some reason so I decided to update via iTunes. iTunes could not see the new Apple TV. I tried to put the Apple TV in recovery mode with the siri remote and nothing happened. Only when I used an old Apple TV silver remote was I able to get it in recovery mode. Once in recovery mode I was able to install the latest TVOS.

Same fot me, I am not able of installing new beta.

This worked for me to get iTunes to see the device, but then the new beta won't install. If I click the Restore button without Option it complains that iTunes doesn't have software for the device. If I use Option and select the ipsw for the new tvOS beta it says it's preparing the Apple TV for restoration, then changes to "Waiting for Apple TV..." and stays like that for hours. Tried three times now.

This should be marked as the answer.

So long as the apl tv is showing up in your USB list in system information, you know it's plugged in.

Putting my unit in DFU mode worked and made the apl tv show up in iTunes immediately.

I'm in the same boat... .Stuck at "Waiting for Apple TV" in itunes with a fast blink on the Apple TV.

This is the only suggestion that worked. Thanks.

SOLUTION:

iTunes will NO show your Apple TV 4 unless you enter restore mode: using the included remote, press and hold MENU + Play/Pause for 6 seconds until the indicator light begins flashing rapidly.

Then you can restore using the downloaded tvos beta

Hold the Option key and click Restore Apple TV in iTunes

Select the tvOS beta software restore image from step 1 and click Open to begin installation.

Similar to me.

When I try to connect the USB cable to a mac, it returns a message 'USB Devices Disabled' Unplug the desvice using too much power.

the AppleTV is the only USB device and I tried with three different cables.

Any idea?

Can verify, this 'solution' worked for me. We placed a little sticker on the side up which works, maybe overkill but can't afford to waste any more time on a problem like this. Thanks!

This fixed it for me!

I had the same problem. ATV not showing in iTunes. However, if you already have a beta installed (presumably 13T5347l), it is very easy to update to the latest beta without using iTunes. You don't even need your Mac. Just go to the ATV Settings, System, Software Updates, Update Software. In my case, it updated to the latest beta (13T5365h).

Cheers.
