Siri Remote to Control TV Volume?

I remember in the keynote that you could supposedly use the Siri Remote to control TV Volume as well as input, but I am unsure how to set that up. Anyone else able to get it working?

If your TV supports HDMI-CEC it will be able to control the volume, no configuration neccessary.

Mine worked right away. I just pointed the Siri Remote at the TV and pressed the Up/Down buttons and the volume adjusted accordingly. I have a Samsung 48" Smart TV from 2014.

There's a setting in the Settings app, I believe under "Remote". It worked automatically for my TV, but I had to change it to control my sound system.

My Vizio wasn't automatically working, but I was able to use this to get it set up. What about power and input? They mentioned that at the keynote as well.

Volume works for me after training (my TV is "dumb") but when I attempt to set up power, I get a "System Control" message stating it's "not supported by my configuration." Is IR-training not possible for TV power I wonder?

Where'd you find the setting for System Control?

I got mine working quickly

Settings -> Remotes and Devices >Volume Control >Learn New Device...

I then followed the prompts and held the Bose 520 remote near the business end of the Apple Remote and pressed and held the volume up, and then the volume down (you watch a histogram themometer thingy go to "full" to complete each command).

Then I saved my custom device name as Bose.

Select that one you made and test it out.

Now, I did do that, but I have been pondering about the IR blaster. I have mine working, but only from IR from the remote, and I should also have the benefit of the IR Blaster on the Apple TV.

I would like to know the location of the IR Blaster LED or LED's.

(I am already thinking about IR reflectors in my cabinet that holds my cable box, apple tv and Bose 520 amp)

Right next to volume in Settings -> Remotes -> "Home Theater" group. It's called "Turn your TV on with your remote"

I don't believe you can train the Siri remote for TV power - the TV can only be powered on if it supports being powered on via HDMI. I think this is a feature that exists only on newer TVs.

Do you have a picture of this setting? I don't see that setting anywhere at all.

I tried to program my ATV/Siri remote and ended up having the '+' volume key power on/off both of my Samsung TV/Monitors. They are at least 3 years old and I'm fairly certain this is separate to the HDMI capabilities, etc.

Note that with the latest tvOS update, the ATV remote now controls TV/Monitor volume correctly.

The volume buttons are intended to control volume and thus they are set up to use the infrared sensor - so technically you could train them to perform any action an IR remote can perform.

The "power on" function that was referenced in the keynote is tied to HDMI and allows you to automatically turn the TV on when you wake the Apple TV up by pressing any of the Bluetooth keys on the remote.

Let us know when you get it working, thanks.

I don't see why the Apple TV unit itself would have a "blaster" - it seems clunky. Do we have evidence that says otherwise?

There does seem to be an IR receiver in the Apple TV itself, but it seems to be only used for "learning" (and the remote is NOT used for learning).

So, Apple TV unit learns the codes, and codes are sent by remote and only the remote. That's what it _appears_ to be doing, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Rght - tear down photos show only receive IRs on the ATV board. Any IR blaster is in the remote.
