Xcode on iMac 5K - Screenshots needed

Hi all,

That's a strange request, you'll see 🙂

I'd like to buy a new iMac, with a 5K screen, because Storyboards for tvOS

are too big for my "old" iMac.

I'd like to see it in a screenshot to see if it's really easier to work on a single screen or not,

with this king of Sotryboard, on this new 5K screen.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Alex

PS: I told you, it's a strange request 🙂

The retina iMac doesn't show things any bigger than the non-retina iMac with the same 27" screen. It's just sharper. So it will not affect how much stuff you can see at once on the storyboard.

Might want to visit your nearest Apple store so you can exercise the new hardware in person.

Unfortunately, I won't see Xcode beta 7.1 running there...

How about download the 5k demo image from http://www.apple.com/imac-with-retina/5k.html and compare it to a screenshot of your existing desktop? If you open both images in the same app and at the same scale, you should be able to compare very easily. Of course that's if you were to disable Retina and just use all 5120x2880 pixels as 1x, but it's useful for comparison's sake. Or you could scale the 5k image down to 50% its default size to compare screen sizes.

You can take your own images and ask them to load them for display...might help to hit Star Bucks first 🙂.

That way you can check the scale to see if things are too small to be worked comfortably.

In the end, tho, I think multiple displays are still your friend.

Thanks for the tip, but I really need to see Xcode running on the 5K.

Unfortunately, I don't have a big desk and can't use 2 displays...

That was my fear!

Thanks a lot for this answer.

Actually I should clarify that. Under Displays, there's a radio button with two choices - "Default for display" or "Scaled". If you choose Scaled, then you can indeed make the desktop "bigger" at the cost of readability. It goes up to "looks like 3200 x 1800" here on Yosemite. That is going to work better on the retina screen than the non retina, of course, since it's got more pixels to work with. The "default" is 2560 x 1440, same as the non retina iMac.
