Apple TV Developer Kit - Missing cable?

I got my Apple TV Developer Kit today - feeling really lucky BUT looks like it's missing a USB-C cable?

I could only find 2 cables out of the box and it's the black power cord and a white USB to lightning cable. After searching in here I found that there should be a USB-C cable included, according to this post: https://forums.developer.apple.com/thread/19428

Hopefully I can get one from shops.. Anyone know if this cable is standard/common?

Spare cables are never wasted. Sooner than later, one will fail. Now you have a spare.

No cable for me either. 😟 Off to Amazon! Why can't we remotely connect to xcode yet?

I bought that cable from Apple and it doesn't work. iTunes (the latest version and I'm running Yosemite) can't see the AppleTV Devkit device The AppleTV Devkit is good as it can be seen on the network and I hitched it to my TV and it boots completely into a useable state so it already has software installed (whether this version of the software is OK for development, I don't know).

didn't get a cable either, and the one I got from the apple store is not good. needed the male usb-a, not female one 😟 And the apple.com com lists is as unavailable, double bummer. Will try to get a male - male usb cable, even though some people seem to report it does not work. We'll see...

Disregard. That cable DOES work. But I still can't see the AppleTV Dev Kit in iTunes but just connecting the USB-C cable and starting up iTunes. I had to put the AppleTV into recovery mode in order to install the beta software. (read step 7 of tvOS_beta_Software_Installation_Guide) tvOS beta Software Installation Guide

Did you get testFlight to work? When I try to submit my app to testFlight Xcode 7.1 beta says I need to add the apple tv to the device list in the members center. But with out that cable you can't get the UDID of the apple tv.

I did not see it in the email that it said it did not come with a USB-C cable. So my bad that assuming a prepackaged product would differ between rounds. However, my frustration with this process is that Apple has shipped to me as a developer a product that does not function without going and buying other products. Without a USB-C cable, you cannot load the beta OS onto the device, making it unusable. That's the part that's upsetting and to be honest it's a little ridiculous to ship a developer product without the pieces necessary for a developer actually using it. Guess I'll be making a trip to the apple store in hopes they have the proper cable in stock.

Received mine two days ago. I went to the Apple Store to get the cable, but they didn't even have one 😠 We have to develop an app within 3 weeks, on such a tight schedule every day counts!

Why 3 weeks?

I have the same feelings, but my Apple TV came with tvOS presinstalled and after OTA update it has newest beta so I need cable to develop app directly from xcode

For anyone complaining about having to separately purchase the usb C lead, count yourself lucky that you've received your Apple TV for only $1!! Think about the rest of us who were not selected (or in my case: was selected, but never got any email!) & have to patiently wait until next month to pay the full price!

My thoughts exactly!

I'm happy to be in the second round and don't mind buying a cable one bit! (computer humor).

I'm using the ATV as is until the cable arrives.

I agree that getting an Apple TV 4 device early and for only $1 is a privilege. As for the required USB-A to USB-C cable, I'm in Ottawa, Canada and here are the options that I have found:

- The Canadian Apple Store doesn't stock the cable yet, it's not even available online. They do carry a USB-C to USB-A adapter for $25 + tax. I guess the first option would be to get one of these adapters and a regular USB cable.

- Other electronics stores in town (Bestbuy, The Source, Canada Computers) don't carry such a cable at all.

- I ordered one on Amazon but the tentative delivery date is around mid November, after the device is supposed to be available for purchase to the public.

Amazon dot ca still lists the one I bought as in stock (B00ZO3EZHM). I can't yet verify whether or not it works since my "kit" has not yet arrived. But it looks right. Staples dot ca also lists one in stock online for a higher price (1843982).

.. there seems to be mounting evidence that a combination of Apple's USB-C male <-> USB-A female (Part number: MJ1M2AM/A) and a USB-A male <-> USB-A male will not connect an ATV4 to a Mac. Can anyone refute this? Has anyone got this combo to work?

Can't say that my first reaction it to buy an Apple cable, sorry no experience with your combo. For anyone else, this is what I got and it seems to work just fine

I'm in gatineau and had the same problem. I found one on PrimeCables.com though. I've ordered a cable from them before and had it within a couple of days. Total with shipping comes to $18.33

I received the white one of these today (B00ZO3EZH2). It works fine.

I should mention that if I have the HDMI plugged in at the same time I get the message: "USB Devices Disabled. Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices". I don't think this is an issue with the cable. The device still works and I've managed to get Demobots running on it 🙂

I bought this C->A cable for $13 off Amazon and it works great: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00URK1VOW

There are numerous other ones on there with decent reviews. You don't have to buy Apple's A->C cable, there's no special sauce in it.

well I've purchased the apple usb c to a adaptor from the retail store, not realising that I don't own a usb a to a cable, so had to order that off amazon.

What I found frustrating with this dev kit, is that apple bundle a lightning cable, which EVERY developer in the world has at least one of, yet neglect something that next to no one has.

And I still can't get my mac (new retina) to see the apple tv.

Edit - after reading the comments above 'about this mac' > usb

It shows apple tv, but itunes doesnt recognise it.

any ideas?

cheers

I haven't read any success stories using that configuration. I suspect you'll need the proper cable - that adapter seems to be "one way" for using USB-A peripherals with the MacBook that has only a USB-C port, not the other way around (peripheral e.g. Apple TV with USB-C to computer with USB-A). Don't quote me on it though. I don't have that adapter; I'm just regurgitating what I've read (or not read, in this case).

Can you post a link to the cable you bought or the brand/part number? I'm look at this one but want to make sure it's going to work:

Thanks!

Thanks! Just what I needed (a link to a cable that works!). Wasn't sure if some of the 3rd party cables on Amazon are charge-only but no data like some of the cheap USB cables out there.

If your Mac shows the Apple TV but iTunes does not, you need to place the Apple TV in DFU mode. Hold the

Menu and Play/Pause buttons until the light on the Apple TV begins flashing rapidly. It should then appear in

iTunes.
