Xcode - unable to copy symbols from this device

I got my Apple TV yesterday in the second round but I can't build from Xcode to the device. I'm able to select it as a build device in Xcode's build menu but trying to deploy results in a build error:

Unable to copy symbols from this device

Xcode was unable to read the required data from the device

Every time I plug the USB into the TV, Xcode recognises it and in the Devices panel I get the status:

Apple TV is busy: Processing symbols files

Xcode will continue when Apple TV has finished.

It tries for around 10 seconds, then the status switches to the "Unable to copy" message above along with a yellow warning triangle.

The TV is running 9.0 (13T5379Ff), Mac is running El Capitan 10.11, Xcode is 7.1 beta 3 (7B85). App Ids, profiles and agreements are all in place. I can't think of anything else to try!

I had to activate the TV and register it in the developer portal. It may be worth noting these second round of TVs had the OS pre-installed, and no USB-C cable (had to buy an Apple adapter).

Has anyone succesfully built an app to a second round dev kit TV?

I'll answer my own question in case anyone else is seeing this problem.

Nothing I tried made it work with the iMac, but oddly it did work on my MacBook Pro.
