My Xcode app in the application folder is nearly 10GB big. It sounds far too big to me for an app. What can I do to reduce its size?

You can't. Apple is unfortuntally putting every new target device SDK into Xcode, with introduction of WatchOS, tvOS etc. etc. we got like 3x increase of Xcode size in last 3 years. See my twitter post about the size: https://twitter.com/nanoant/status/668790655053897728
