I thought I would try to connect the Dev kit Apple TV to my TV downstairs and I could not pair the remote. I downloaded the latest GM software, AppleTV5,3_9.0_13T396_Restore, restored it, and plugged the device in (with Ethernet).
I see first “Pair Your Remote” and I click the trackpad and nothing happens. Then it says hold “Menu” and “+” and I do for over 2 seconds and the screen changes to “Pairing Your Remote - Bring it closer to your Apple TV to continue pairing.” and I have the remote about one foot and then 2 inches away facing the Apple TV. I’ve got the lightning cable plugged in and connected to power.
I am able to press and hold “Menu” and “Play” which causes the light on the Apple TV to flicker and reboot the device.
This all worked when I first tried it downstairs when I received the kit.
So, what’s the trick to getting the remote to pair?
On launch day I called AppleCare for replacement and they were not set up for that yet and referred me to the dev folks. Finding the dev folks was not easy either (by email) and I found the phone numbers. Long story short, after spending at least two hours on the phone with the dev program, being transferred to no less than 4 different people and ending back up with AppleCare, I found another replyable email to dev support actually got me a real person and a personal call back to replace the two devices at the local Apple Store (and they were not quite prepared for the exchange 4 days after launch).
So, the new devices work and it all must have been something wrong with the hardware (in the remote I suspect).
