Trying to learn to program (Objective-C)

Hi, I'm trying to learn to program in Objective-C so I can change my career. I have a mortgage to pay so can't go back to formal education because I need my full time job. My question is what's the best way to start off? I've bought the Big Nerds Rand Guide to Objective C but it all just seems to boil my brain. I need to start at the most basic, beginner point there is. Maybe I should start with a simpler Language? I would like to learn more than just iOS languages to improve my job prospects but mainly I'd like a iOS development job of some sort as most programmer jobs seem to be very keen on Degree's, with the exception of iOS which seems to prefer some released apps (excuse me if I'm wrong).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It depends on your age, programming experience and other factors. If you are in your 20s or early 30s, you can probably absorb anything quickly. If you are in your 40s and have little or no experince in programming, you will have a long, widing road ahead. If you have mastered one programming language, that'll defintely help because you know what to learn before anything else. If you don't know where to start off, you should probably find out how to store data (XML, SQLite...) in any programming language. You won't be able to go very far without knowing that.

I agree that age and prior experience play heavily into your learning curve. In my case, I am new to iOS also, but have many years of programming including C#. Because of this, my learning curve is not expected to be extensive. I took a class on Udemy entitled "The Complete iOS9 Objective-C Guide" by Aaron Caines. It is a $200 course, but they were runing a $10 special on any course at the time.

If you can get by with the experience and no degree, this is an excellent place to start. If you are going to be trying for a job in the corporate world, the lack of a degree may provide may brick walls for you.
