Yesterday when I downloaded and installed Xcode 7.3.1, I found it took up 10.49 Gbytes of disk space. Today I uninstalled Xcode, installed the new El Captian update and re-installed Xcode. Once again the 3.4 Gbyte program filled up 10.49 Gbytes of disk space.
Does any one else have the same problem?

The download is compressed and the actual size of Xcode is about right. That doesn't mean that the program itself needs 10GB of RAM to run, there's a lot of programs, libraries and code that are also part of Xcode.

What does the install size read on your HD? I believe my previous install was around 4 - 6 Gbytes. This install, at 10.49 Gbytes seems enormous!
10.5 gb installed, with OS X, iOS, tvOS and WatchOS SDKs, docs and simulators etc. is common/typical and not new. It's not called an IDE without good reason.
