Upgrading Mac OS X 10.7.5 search for advice

Hello!

I have Mac Book Pro 17 inch december 2011. Mac OS X 10.7.5

I will be grateful for your help on how I can safely upgrade my Mac OS X 10.7.5 to a higher version because my OS is obsolete and I have problems working with apps, in particular I can't install MySQL, for example, and can't perform other important tasks.

I am not a professional, I am just learning and hence I am afraid to do any OS upgrade without support and guidance from professionals because I need help to make sure I:

- choose a correct upgrade that will improve the functionality and will be accepted by my computer

- perform correct installation and all following procedures

How shall do this?

Which OS shall I install? Does Apple offer free upgrades for my system?

Shall I perform several ones to get to the highest that can be installed on my Mac?

Thank you very much!

Since 2013, in fact, macOS upgrades have been free. Your Mac can definitely support OS X El Capitan (10.11), the latest release version. Just open the Updates page of the Mac App Store and follow the directions for the OS X El Capitan upgrade.

Thank you very much for your answer. I have been told that it is not recommended to leapfrog to a much higher version from 10.7.5. Also do these upgrades require reinstallation of Microsoft Office and other programs?

Thank you!

If this is about the OS X public/app store version, those user-centric questions may be better suited for Apple's public community support forums, rather than here in the developer/IDE forums, thanks.
