how to obtain iBeacon license number?

Hi,

I'm trying to order some BLE modules from Microchip. They are holding my order because they need my iBC license number for apple. I search the apple site and found that I can register at developer.apple.com/ibeacon. However, this page does not appear to have any registration process. Clicking on the "Getting started" link the documentation says:

People Making Devices With iBeacon Technology
If you are interested in manufacturing devices with iBeacon technology, you will need to obtain a license before building these devices. Please visit https:/ ibeacon/ to apply for an iBeacon license. Licensees receive access to technical specifications, a license to use the iBeacon logo, and the iBeacon Identity Guidelines.

Again, the link describe is the page i found this doc. Which does not have any information about registering.

Can someone help guide me to where this process happens?

I'm truly sorry to hear that Microchip asked you for an iBeacon license number. They shouldn't have made that request, and I've told them that they need to change their process & policy. Please contact them again (in a day or two), and let me know if they continue to say that you need to provide one to them.

Since other folks interested in iBeacon technology may come across this discussion in the future, I'll provide some added details they may find useful:

iBeacon licensing is handled via a 'click-through' license agreement. Go to <https://developer.apple.com/ibeacon/> and click on the "Download Artwork and Specification" link. You'll be presented with the iBeacon license agreement, which you agree to by clicking on the "Agree" button.

After agreeing to the click-through agreement a ZIP file (which contains the relevant specifications, the "Made for Apple iBeacon" artwork (badges), and guidelines on using the badges and iBeacon trademark) will be downloaded.

iBeacon licensees will not receive an iBeacon license number of any kind, and other licensees (such as chipset vendors) should not ask you to provide one.

You don't need to join the MFi program to develop a device that uses iBeacon technology, given that the MFi organization is not involved with iBeacon licensing.
