Or, to put it boldly, it has nothing to do with the new, elegant, airy, modern sanserif face which we can see on Apple's pages. You can check it even without downloading – the letters "SF" in the announcement are set whith the font you can actually download, while the body of the message uses new, supposedly "real" SF font.
Can somebody comment on this?

I think the fonts are installed. They appear to be in /System/Library/Fonts (look for files starting with SFNS) but they are not accessible in FontBook or font menus.
One post I found on the internet (talking about the new Chinese Font) noted that the font name (not the file name) may start with a '.' which makes it invisible in some applications (to stop people changing it).

My rant was not about problems with installing the SF family. I am using Suitcase Fusion to manage my fonts, and they installed fine. I am complaining about design of the new family – it is very close to the "golden standard" of Helvetica (or Helvetica New) - in my opinion, especially in small sizes on screen it is not the optimal solution, both aesthetically and ergonomically.

The font Apple uses on the website is Myriad Pro. Only the "SF" is using San Francisco. So it makes sense that the font you downloaded matches the "SF" but not the "elegant, airy, modern sanserif face which we can see on Apple's pages". 😉
