Why did Apple ditch the headphone jack on the new iPhone?

The news media is abuzz with speculations about the new iPhone. One of the highly likely new features (or lack thereof) is that there isn't an aux/earbud jack. Can I just say I don't like that?! I use the headphone port all the time, not only for headphones, but also for aux cords. Very few if any new audio devices require the usage of an aux cord to play a device through them, however, many speakers I come in contact with (between car stereos, speakers at mine and other people's houses, etc.) require me to use my aux cord. With no audio jack on the iPhone, all of this is rendered useless!! Why????? Haven't we the slightest appreciation for practicality? Not everyone in the world drives a car that has bluetooth in it, nor does everyone own a radio or speaker at home that uses a wireless connection! I really am not liking this new 'feature'. It would, for me and others, cause a magnitude of problems for listening to music period. aAnd furthermore, the alleged 'AirPod' wireless earbuds are going to cost a fortune! Unless they come free with your device (Just like you get earbuds with iPods/Phones for now) a buyer of the new phone will be required to pay out their nose to even listen to music. iPhones are (and not without merit) stereotypically quite pricy. Purchasing fancy wireless AirPods is going to be a big detriment to Apple phone buying at this rate. And I'd HATE (I don't know if I even could) to switch to Android just because of one harbinger of a mistake!! What caused Apple to believe this to be wise? Or didn't Apple think of practicality for the everyday American citizen?!
