Does Apple Pay REQUIRE 3D Secure?

We are thinking about implementing Apple Pay in our mobile iOS application however we do not currently have 3D Secure set up as it is a US business. Do we need to implement 3D Secure in order to accept Apple Pay as a form of payment within our mobile application?

In the apple help article the following statement makes it sound like 3D Secure is optional "With Apple Pay, Touch ID or the device passcode can be used as the consumer device verification method, instead of the more traditional methods of PIN, signature for transactions in stores, or 3D Secure for transactions within apps." - Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method - Apple Support

Where as in the developer documentation there is a statement "You must support the 3-D Secure protocol; support of the EMV protocol is optional." - https://developer.apple.com/reference/passkit/pkpaymentrequest/1619257-merchantc apabilities

The 'or' is about transactions within the app vs. in a store, etc.. Does that apply to your example?

Remember that using Apple Pay (a payment scheme, not a form of payment) doesn't involve the actual transaction, so don't assume that using AP means 'transactions within the app'.

Ok
