WatchKit CoreLocation to use Watch GPS Chip

TLDR: I want to use the watch GPS for location even when the phone is in range.

Previously this was not allowed, but I have recently seen multiple apps that allow you to force their watch extension to use the on-watch GPS for corelocation even when the phone is in range.

I understand there is a battery life impact, but this is critical for my application and I have been unable to find how to do it. Help please!

I have the same problem. I have spent 20+ hours trying to get it to only use the watch and the only way I have found so far is to turn off bluetooth on the phone.

If you start a workout on the watch with the activity type set to golf then the watch will use its GPS.

  • Ah, that explains how the golf app hole 19 does it. Golf4watch also does use its internal gps while golfing. This is because in gold your phone is in your bag or golf cart which is many yards away from your wrist.
