Xcode iOS 12 playground issues

I am new to coding and trying to print the most basic line of code in Xcode 12 playground and the output doesn’t show up on the right side or bottom of the playground. I’m using the playground from the Apple online book so not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.
OK, let’s see if we can get a really simple test going. Try this:
  1. Launch Xcode 12.

  2. Choose File > New > Playground.

  3. Select the macOS tab at the top.

  4. Select Blank.

  5. Click Next and save it to disk.

  6. Replace the text with the print("Hello Cruel World!").

  7. Click the play button at the bottom.

  8. The text should be displayed in the console area at the bottom. If it isn’t, choose View \> Debug Areas \> Activate Console.

Does that work?

I’m deliberately using a macOS playground here because they are much simpler (under the covers an iOS playground depends on the simulator). The goal is to get the simple case working and then move on to the more complex one.
