Software update for iPad keeps failing
In settings, disable your passcode
In settings, set the screen auto lock to "never"
Disable facial recognition if your device has that feature
Connect the device to a Windows PC using a USB cable
Update the device using the latest iTunes downloaded from Apple (not through the Windows store)
Re-enable your passcode, screen auto lock, and facial recognition
I ran into similar errors like TiredJosie while trying to upgrade an iPad Pro 9.7. Standard upgrades started to fail with iOS 14.3 (IIRC, some 2(?) ago already). At that time I somehow managed to "upgrade" into 14.4beta but any further upgrade failed. Today I gave it a new try, again several failed attempts, things got worse with each reset/new attempt. In the end this is how it worked:
iPad Pro 9.7 cell (AKA iPa 16,4) stuck in recovery mode, impossible to activate DFU mode
- USB (orig. TB3 to Lightning) connection from MacBook Pro (Ventura 13.2),
- finder shows "iPad in recovery mode", options to update or restore
- standard update/restore options fail several times, throws "unknown error", Code (1100), (6) 065b.044c and variations
- manually download the latest ipsw files
- while finder shows "iPad in recovery mode press and hold the "Option"-key while clicking the restore button
- now the finder asks for the ipsw file
- proceed like normal... and voilà! :-)
