Software update for iPad keeps failing

I have a 2nd Gen IPad Pro 12.9, when trying to install the iPadOS 14.2 software update it is able to download the update but always fails when I get to the installation. It says unable to install update, an error occurred installing iPadOS 14.2 and I have the option to retry or remind me later. Neither has worked and I’ve tried restarting my iPad and logging out and back into my icloud, I also have WiFi and a substantial amount of charge, anyone know how I can get past this please?
Same problem here. Factory reset of the iPad did not result in success either.
I was able to get the update installed using iTunes on a Windows PC. However, you may want to try just the first 3 steps before trying iTunes, just in case that helps.
  1. In settings, disable your passcode

  2. In settings, set the screen auto lock to "never"

  3. Disable facial recognition if your device has that feature

  4. Connect the device to a Windows PC using a USB cable

  5. Update the device using the latest iTunes downloaded from Apple (not through the Windows store)

  6. Re-enable your passcode, screen auto lock, and facial recognition

Some of the ideas came from an article and its comments which you can find by searching for "appuals how to fix update error 4000 on iphone" (this site will not let me add a link to the article).
I tried the first 3 steps that sparkle muffin suggested on my iPad and it worked. After months of not being able to install. Thanks so much.

I ran into similar errors like TiredJosie while trying to upgrade an iPad Pro 9.7. Standard upgrades started to fail with iOS 14.3 (IIRC, some 2(?) ago already). At that time I somehow managed to "upgrade" into 14.4beta but any further upgrade failed. Today I gave it a new try, again several failed attempts, things got worse with each reset/new attempt. In the end this is how it worked:

iPad Pro 9.7 cell (AKA iPa 16,4) stuck in recovery mode, impossible to activate DFU mode

  1. USB (orig. TB3 to Lightning) connection from MacBook Pro (Ventura 13.2),
  2. finder shows "iPad in recovery mode", options to update or restore
  3. standard update/restore options fail several times, throws "unknown error", Code (1100), (6) 065b.044c and variations
  4. manually download the latest ipsw files
  5. while finder shows "iPad in recovery mode press and hold the "Option"-key while clicking the restore button
  6. now the finder asks for the ipsw file
  7. proceed like normal... and voilà! :-)
