Big Sur Mac Crash 4 times in the last 6 hours - 2 no-report and 2 reports

With the upgrade to Big Sur 11.0.1, my iMac Retina 4K 6-core intel core i7 has become highly unstable. Its crashed 4 times in the last 6 hours. 2 times it crashed with no report. The last 2 times I received a report. The odd thing is one time it crashed when I wasn't even using the computer. This time it crashed with Android studio open, safari open, the app store open, and amazon music playing. Otherwise, I wasn't using the computer.

I used to brag to my friends how stable and secure MacOS was. Not quite sure with this release.

Any suggestions?

  • Same issue, has anybody been able to fix it?

    "com.apple.driver.watchdog"

  • Same issue and crash report. Using 2019 MacBookPro 16,1, Big Sur 11.4. No peripherals attached. Microsoft Edge open but inactive. Running NordVPN and Kaspersky. It just quietly went to sleep and restarted. Kind of zen-like. The reference to userspace watchdog, however, triggered my paranoia.

  • Same issue and crash report. Using 2019 MacBookPro 13" Big Sur 11.4, Mac OS version:20F71

I can tell you I solved this issue, but I can't tell you why it worked. I'll tell you anyway in case it helps; for me this was on a Late 2015 27" iMac with 3 TB fusion drive.

I experienced this issue for days or weeks at a time, often with less than 30 minutes between crashes. I ran hardware tests on my drive and RAM, I minimized my application usage, nothing seemed to reliably help. Eventually I noticed that after restarts my Finder windows in the status bar at the bottom were showing very low available HD space (e.g. 50 GB left on a 3 TB internal drive). I thought maybe swap space was an issue and would delete or move files to a Western Digital FireWire external HD when the computer rebooted. Disk space appears better now (80 GB available again), so yay! Then the iMac crashes again.

On rebooting, it now appears that there is just 50 GB or less space left. Huh. Delete, repeat, rinse. Hey, I am up to 100 GB free. Crash. Reboot. Huh, I only have 50 GB free again. I checked for crash dumps or other kinds of new big files and found nothing. And then it would crash again and I would find myself back around 50 GB disk space available. Like somehow the OS had lost track of what was free disk space and started writing swap into bad places? I have no idea. But through all this weirdness no actual data seemed to be lost.

Eventually I went through an arduous effort to find and move all the big files and directories that didn't need fusion drive-level performance until I cleared about 300+ GB of free space. Once I did that, the available disk space reports seemed to stabilize and I haven't had any crashes since then. (I also disconnected the WD FireWire 800 external HD and replaced it with a USB 3 Fantom Drive, but not sure if that's related.)

So I can't tell you why my chronic issue here stopped, but I can tell you what I did to stop it. Good luck with your issues!

  • My issue seems to be solved too. No crashes in the last2 weeks+. I didn't change anything, although I do keep current on the Big Sur betas. Maybe Apple finally fixed it in the OS?

  • Same issue here, on Macbook Pro 16 2019 with Apple 6k Monitor

I upgraded to Big Sur couple weeks ago. Watchdog-crashes begin.

In couple of days already 4 crashes. 6 months old problem and these still keep coming. What the heck Apple.

I'd like to pile on :)

Since I have upgraded to 11.5 beta (20G5042c) my MacBook Air has become so unstable it’s impossible to compile anything on it. Clang will crash, and then the system will panic at the earliest opportunity.

I can’t even install MacOS 12 on it, the installer breaks at the very end.

I’m pretty sure something is broken with the memory allocator, judging by what forensics I get (malloc/free inconsistencies, as others have mentioned). I assume the VM swapping mechanism is buggy. That would explain why the panics only happen when the memory gets almost full and the swapping mechanism kicks in.

Anyways. I agree that as time passes on, MacOS gets pointlessly more complex, making it more prone to bugs. It’s high time Apple focussed on the kernel design rather than touting cosmetics features so few people care about.

Same issue for me on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020). Turns off unexpectedly, but only when I'm using an external monitor.

I took it in to the Apple Store and they wiped the drive and reinstalled the OS said everything should be fine. The issue restarted same day I brought it home. This is very frustrating.

I also have same issue. crashes all the time I use on battery and put it into sleep.

MBP early 2015 13 inch, MacOS Big Sur 11.4 How to solve it? Any idea?

watchdog 1

@kec.pthread 1 @kec.corecrypto 11.1 @kec.Libm 1

this was not fixed still after 7-8 months?

I bought a brand new iMac 27" 2020 i7 back in May and right out of the box it started to crash, I spent about 3 weeks chatting on a daily basis with apple support. I even tried reverting back to previous OS Catalina, was still crashing. Eventually they told me to pack the computer and they'd send me a new one, which I did.. took about 3 weeks before the new one crashed again. Twice since last week but still a pain, it's making work pretty stressful!

I was having daily crashes on my MBP 16 2019 with no external devices connected. My IT suggested I do a NVRAM and SMC reset and then no more kernel panic for many days now. The panic I was getting was a watchdog triggered panic in kernel_task. I would never believe when they tell you to do the NVRAM and SMC reset but in this case it worked! Note that NVRAM and SMC reset are 2 different procedures to follow. Make sure to do them correctly based on the type of device that you have (if you have Touch ID and T2 security chip, etc)

Same issue here on 11.4 "stable", just made a clean install not sure what it could be but seems to me that every time it happens time machine is running. I just did a fresh install iMac 27 2020 what I suspect could be: 2 extra Crucial RAM 16Gb each or some App: Little Snitch, Paste, Tyme 2 or 2 external SSD case

panic(cpu 4 caller 0xffffff800d1f9a25): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 120 seconds service: com.apple.logd, total successful checkins since load (2750 seconds ago): 276, last successful checkin: 0 seconds ago service: com.apple.WindowServer, total successful checkins since load (2720 seconds ago): 260, last successful checkin: 120 seconds ago service: com.apple.remoted, total successful checkins since load (2750 seconds ago): 274, last successful checkin: 0 seconds ago

Same here. Here's what I got:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff8009bfea25): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.remoted in 180 seconds
service returned not alive with context : unresponsive work processor(s): remoted heartbeat on bridge
service: com.apple.logd, total successful checkins since wake (180 seconds ago): 19, last successful checkin: 0 seconds ago
service: com.apple.WindowServer, total successful checkins since wake (180 seconds ago): 19, last successful checkin: 0 seconds ago
service: com.apple.remoted, total successful checkins since wake (180 seconds ago): 1, last successful checkin: 180 seconds ago

I am also having the same Problem after updating to Big Sur. I was advised by Apple support to reformat my device. After reading the details here not sure whether that would solve my problem or not. Hopefully Apple solves this soon. Frustrated.

PROBLEM.... SORT OF FIXED/REDUCED, Been having this problem just like everyone, noticed that it only crashed when things were idle, and once when it looked like it was going to crash I started to move the mouse and it came bace from the edge. I got the idea to try a "Mouse jiggle USB port mouse mover" which I turn on anytime I am away from my screen (The Jiggler I have has a built in power switch) and for the last 2 months it has not kernel panicked once when the Jiggler was on. This proves that it is a problem when things are Idle and Apple needs to fix this.

  • @Jackill, from your conclusive experiment it seems that something goes wrong on inactivity.

Thus it might be interesting to test:

System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter                                 and as a bug hunting method, try the different settings which might block any thing which is fired upon inactivity.

Confirming that this still crashes on Big Sur 11.5.2 (20G95) with the following log:

It's really hard to continue doing work when this keeps happening. @appledevs a little help here would be great

My MacBook Pro 13" M1 (Big Sur 11.5.2 (20G95)) crashed several times already.

One of the crash reports with error:

IOSurface creation failed with size [844 x 128]. If size looks sane, this is likely due to an IOSurface leak and system IOSurface limit reached.
