Xcode 8.1 download from App Store is agonizingly slow

I'm in the process of downloading/installing XCode 8.1 from the appstore. The process has been underway now for about 7+ hours. The status currently shows 2.61GB olf 4.47GB. This has to be the worst application install I've ever worked with on ANY platform! I'm running on an early 2015 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD and dual-core I7 processor. I just don't understand how this process can be so painfully slow. I'm about to leave my office, I'm hoping I can pause this process and resume at home without having to restart from the beginning.

Happens every time they update tools, betas, applications and os's at the same time.

Your 8GB ram isn't helping, tho, and I'd bet you don't have all that much free space on your SSD...

I would not interrupt and restart from another place …

@KMT: I've heard that the update/install process is very memory-intensive, but 8GB of RAM is the max that's supported on the MacBook Air. I do have 58GB of free space. (The install did run significantly faster on my 17" MacBook Pro which has 16GB of RAM.)

Why can't they give us a link to a dmg? I'm frustrated as ****!

If you have a developer account (paid), you can get a dmg by clicking "See more downloads" at the bottom of the downloads page here:

https://developer.apple.com/download/

It usually takes a day or two for the newest version to show up there after final release.

You don't need a paid account. A free Apple ID account gives access to the Xcode final release downloads (the 8.x ones being in XIP archives rather than DMG, by the way) and many other developer downloads by following "See more downloads" link. Last time I posted this info, it was removed by a moderator. Let's see what happens today.

Hi goldsdad, I am trying your suggestions to download the xcode. It is kindof stuck in 99% and never moved for about half hour now. Have you seen this before? How long does it usually take? Thanks

Hi, I've downloaded several versions of Xcode that way, but don't remember how long they took. I'd terminate the download and try again if it was stuck at 99% for half an hour.

I am also having rediculously slow download for 8.2.1 I have a new MacBook Pro, purchased today... lots of disk space and it is stupid slow... supposedly 4-5 days it says it will take. I tried downloading the dmg but that is also very slow and continually fails.

I tried to download Xcode 9.1 through the App Store today. It said it would take around 8 hours.

Then I found this StackOverflow post which helped me reduce the time to 30 minutes.

  • Try pausing the download in the App Store
  • Go to the purchased page and sign in if you are not signed in
  • Restart the download

Really weird, but this worked for me.

Update 2021: This is the link that includes the stable version (not just the beta version): https://developer.apple.com/download/all/
