Big Sur panic when connect/disconnect usb-c dock

Big Sur panic when connect/disconnect usb-c dock (tested with many usb–c docks including baseus, ugreen, non apple – not reproduced with apple multiport adapter).

Problem persist! I have many panics every day!

  • I have a 16" 2019 MBP running Big Sur 11.4 and I'm use an HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 with my monitors connected via USB-C.

I get this all the time. Sometimes it can be all of a sudden in the middle of a session, but it is much more prevalent when I am plugging in/out of the dock. It also occurs when the laptop wakes up after being in sleep mode. I get the quick sound of the fans blowing and then it reboots. It happens way too many times. I have no other option in terms of trying other docks.

I report the error every time I get it. It has been going on since the Big Sur upgrade.

  • Are you connecting your monitor via DisplayPort? Try using HDMI instead - my laptop only crashes with DisplayPort, never with HDMI. Also, try connecting your monitor without the dock (get a USB-C to HDMI cable) to rule out a problem with dock

  • Happens to me as well as described by @dbdotconf. I use 2 monitors with 16'' 2021 Big Sur 11.5.1. The same flow of actions, almost every day when I plug in monitors via 2 TB3, I hear fans and then it crashes and reboots. Also send report every time. This is very annoying. Such amount of money was paid not for such an experience with Mac which is supposed to be ideal.

2 days without crashes after upgrading to Monterey. Is this real??? I mean it is too good to be true, right ?

  • I hope this doesn’t jinx it, but same result here. No crash for a week since Monterey.

  • Yep, too good to be true. I've been on Monterey for a while and problem definitely still persists. Took me a week to hit the problem. So enjoy it for the short time that it works.

Same here, no more crashes since Monterey upgrade.

  • If only Apple would bother porting the fix back to Big Sur for those who can't upgrade... my work laptop usually lags behind the latest release by 6 months as it takes a lot of time for my company to test and certify all corporate software.

  • I just got this crash again on Monterey. Seems that its not solved yet.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the problem still exists in Monterey. It may happen less frequently. It took a week before I hit my first crash, and then it crashed about 5 times in the next 2 days. Then I went about 1.5 weeks and now its crashing multiple times a day again. Exact same stack trace as before.

  • Can you share more details about your machine and setup? Are you using a dock, and if so which brand/model? What about your monitor? Are the crashes happening when you connect or disconnect the monitor? Are you connecting it via HDMI or DisplayPort?

Also seems to be resolved in :

System Version: macOS 12.0.1 (21A559)   Kernel Version: Darwin 21.1.0

Been running a week or so with 12.0.1 and back connected to the CalDigit USB-C Pro Dock - single cable Thunderbolt 3 docking, leveraging both DisplayPort connectors at 4k @ 60Hz. It takes an insanely long time for the monitors to re-sync after blanking (I think I prohibit sleep), but no more panics.

However, now web-cams plugged in via the Thunderbolt 3 dock - no longer work. With a simple passive USB-C -> USB-A adaptor, they do work fine. sigh. (so much for single cable docking).

This issue still persists for me in 11.6.1 on a daily basis, is there any known workaround (other than switching to a different computer manufacturer or upgrading a feature release?).

To pour more fire on this flame, yes, this is 100% reproducible in Big Sur 11.6. Plugged into Caldigit hub with external monitor via displayport. Cycling the power a few times on the hub will trigger it. Or waiting for the laptop to sleep overnight. I've been sending crashdumps every night for a week, if anyone at Apple feels like looking into it.

This has been happening for awhile. I am hating the idea but did they just release new macs with ports again and suddenly docs are not working?

My Macbook Model is 'MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)' and OS is 'Monterey 12.0.1(21A559)' The fan suddenly starts spinning quickly, and it reboots. It happens once every few hours. I am currently neurotic. So, I am using it with only power connected to the MacBook. What happens when this happens on a DELL laptop? They come to my seat and fix my laptop. For a dell laptop the same price as the macbook pro, it's 100%. I think all the devices designed and built by Apple are great, but they need a lot of improvement in terms of after-sales support.

Updated to OS11.6. Still crashes with monitor attached through HP Docking station to MBP 2019, 16". It is as decribed above, with no fix in sight. Not satisfying, Apple.

Same here, on 11.6.1. Sometimes crashes, sometimes not, when plugging back to my dell dock-station / Dell screen with my MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019). (also fan spin at their maximum just before the reboot).

This is really annoying. Isn't there any monitor driver we could force update to fix the issue?

Come on Apple, get your sh*t together and fix this. It's been happening for months on every version for every user that has a MBP 16" and uses a dock.

This also happens to me. Currently using the "Wavlink Dual 5K Type-C Laptop Universal Docking Station" and for the past few days, my Intel MBP 2019 (that's on MacOS Monterey 12.0.1) keeps panicking with the following message:

Same problem with HP thunderbolt with my Mac. Is there a solution for this ?

This issue has been fixed for me since updating to Monterey / OS 12.

2019 16 inch MBP with a Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock, Dell U3818DW monitor, and DisplayPort between the dock and monitor.

I had this problem for months. I used to have a  Dell WD19 Docking station, pure USB-C no Thunderbolt and the only solution was to replace it with a Satechi - Thunderbolt 4 Dock - Model: ST-UCT4DM, it doesn't present any problems as of now. And I have stated in a previous comment that this only happened to my newest MBP MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) Processor 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 Memory 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 Graphics AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB Other older MBP didn't present this problem. Apple should provide a better solution other than having users buy new hardware and take responsibility for what seems a compatibility problem.
