Time Machine and Monterey

Greetings all, I am running Monterey Version 12.0 Beta (21A5284e) on a 2017 MBP. I have been trying to run Time Machine and seem always to get the following message: "The file “%@” could not be backed up." I have tried running on different drives, one of 4TB and the other 6TB from Seagate. Both drives seem to work fine as general storage. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

  • Adding to the confusion. Sometimes I get through 25% of the backup (~500G) and others I get 50% before the backup fails

  • Same comment as above however after the daIL. There is a backup on the drive

  • Hi, PauGRichardson. So, did your time machine back to normal without any further action? I've just updated my mac to macOS 12 beta 4, however, the time machine is still malfunction. May I also know which beta version you are using?

Yes, this issue happens after beta 3 on my MacBook Pro too, and I haven't found a good solution. Nevertheless, I successfully backup in safe mode. It takes a lot of hours for backup in safe mode, and so, it is not a very feasible way. Notwithstanding, you can still make a backup periodically in safe mode. This solution is just not as convenient as usual.

Sincerely,

  • Yeah, and now it gets even stranger. Despite receiving the error message I described, sometimes- about 25% of the time - the backup completes successful.

I spent some time searching online and found the following link below:

One of the solutions in the link is to make sure and exclude Time Machine from backing up your OneDrive folder; it seems to work. at least for the initial backup of my system

I wonder if other "network" folder systems have the same problem. I have Box, but I had been excluding that from Time Machine before these problems began.

Fixed in Beta release version 12.0 Beta (21A5304g)
