Monterey (Beta 5), Atmos Capabilities

I have an 11.1 playback system configured properly through 'Audio Midi Setup' and testing each speaker works as expected. However, I can't find a single app that will connect with more than 5.1 channels.

'Music' plays back Atmos content in 5.1, 'TV' plays back in 5.1, the Finder and Safari both play back in 5.1.

Is this a bug or feature ?

Why have a 7.1.4 core audio device if no apps can use it ?

FYI: the AppleTV will play back the same content in 7.1.4...

  • Can anyone confirm if this is working, now that Monterey is out for awhile. I’m looking to upgrade my setup from 5.1 to 7.1.2 and can’t find info anywhere.

Please follow up if you find a resolution to this. While I can address my height channels using the Dolby Atmos Renderer when mixing, I really need to be able to play reference Atmos mixes from Apple Music or Blu-Ray (once MacGo updates) and need a better pipeline than doing an external decode of aTV output with a receiver and capture of 12 channels via an audio interface.

I've noted that Apple Music "Atmos" only feeds 5.1 channels of a 7.1 setup so far, on Big Sur.

Yeah, this is crucial. It's nice to hear that Monterey can configure speaker setups with more than 8 channels (which is the limit under Big Sur), but they need to be recognized in other apps.

Same issue here. Have a functional 7.1.4 but nothing beyond Logic Pro seems to be able to use it.

  • I have 5.1.2 (usb -> 8-channel DAC -> speakers), and atmos works (signals in the two height speakers) in Apple music with spatial audio. macOS 12.2.1 (21D62)

  • @mktippett Interesting, with Monterey 12.2.1 and 8-channel MOTU DAC I can only get 5.1 output with Apple Music. Can you share some more details on your setup and configuration?

In Audio MIDI Setup, Configure Speakers, 5.1.2 Atmos Surround is selected, the 8 channels are assigned correctly and the Test buttons output noise on the correct speakers. Nothing at all comes out on the height channels, just the first 6 channels are active (5.1).

  • I've read a couple of reports that people with Merging DACs are able to get more than six channels. I can't confirm it myself, though. I have a Digiface USB, which supports up to 32 channels out, and it doesn't work at all for surround anymore from Music in 12.3.1. Stereo only. Surround still works in the TV app up to 5.1, in Monterey, and in Music works up to 5.1 under Big Sur. Aggregate devices seem broken for all surround for Music in 12.3.1, as well.

No, Dolby Atmos beyond 5.1 is not supported on Apple Music for macOS Monterey 12.2.

I just called Apple support, and they answered that Apple Music on macOS Monterey currently only supports 5.1. They also pointed to this Discussions article which has an answer from a community specialist:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253694386

The support rep also asked to provide feedback on this missing feature here, in order to prioritise the feature: https://www.apple.com/feedback/

And now it seems that a mere two channels is the limit from Apple Music, at least under the latest version of Monterey (12.3.1)! In other words, no surround support at all!

The TV app is still limited to 5.1.

Apple, come on, this is ridiculous!

Not sure if people are still struggling with this, but my 7.1.4 system is receiving all 12 channels from Apple Music, JRiver, Audirvana, Audacity, VLC and other apps on macOS Monterey.

It works great.

@27Chris How did you achieve it? I am running Mac Os 12.4, I configured 7.1.4 from the audio/midi config but I can just listen 5.1 from Apple Music. Really weird...

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!
